  3. Sun Princess
We were with a family group of 11 and had an amazing time on the Sun Princess and she still lives up to her name of providing excellent service with a personal touch. This was a Xmas and New Year Cruise and attention to detail was made to create that Xmas atmosphere; with the ship decorated nicely in Xmas theme, Santa Claus visit for the kiddies, Xmas Choir and Xmas treats., News Years hats for the gentleman and tierras for the ladies in the dining room, a lovely New Years Eve Ballon Drop Party. They also did a ballon drop for Princess's 50th Anniversary and this was a great evening. We cruised with her back in 2011 and the staff services right through out the ship were excellent, nothing is too much trouble, ask and you shall receive within reason. This has been our 6th cruise with Princess and the quality of service by all staff in all areas has been top grade and the personal touches by staff make it even more special. Stateroom: We had a balcony stateroom on Carrib Deck 9. Although the rooms are looking a little tired now due to the age of the ship, the facilities were clean and comfortable. She under went a renovation in 2013 but the staterooms were not renovated at this time, only the public areas. Our stateroom steward Carmelo attended to any requirements and our stateroom was cleaned on a regular basis, twice a day. I take my hat off to them, they certainly work hard for their money to please us. Dining: We had 11 family members on this cruise and we initially were separated on two tables for dining but we asked the Maitre Rui Pereira to be seated on one table and that was rectified the next day. We had the early dining at 5:30pm, the late dining was at 7.45pm. The food menu in the Marquis Dining room was superb, you could order what you like, if you want two mains you got two mains, if you want three sweets you can have it. If you didn't like a particular food that came with the dish, it was altered for you, if it can be done. The wait staff Vicki and Suri were so in tune to our requirements; they new what wine and drinks we like, gave us a run down of their favorites off the menu and recommendations, they added the personal touch by calling us by name and having small conversations with us about our day. The Horizon Court buffet had a good selection of food and we ate here sometimes for breakfast and lunch. They constantly serve food throughout the day from 5.00am to 11.00pm starting with Continental Breakfast, Breakfast, Lunch, Light Snack, Dinner. We also used the Regency Dining room to have breakfast (7.30am - 9.30 am) and lunch (12.00 - 1.30pm. Afternoon tea (3.30pm - 4.30pm) If you find it too crowed in the buffet this is nice to escape the crowds. There is also Verdi's Pizzeria, a separate dining seating area on deck 8. There is no extra charge for food, the pizzas are fairly large 10 inch, and this is open from 11:30am - 2.30pm and in the evening they serve pasta instead of pizza (5:30pm - 11.00pm). There is also the Terrace Grill that serves different types of burgers, chips, bratwurst sausage, assortment of meat pies. The burgers and chips were yummy and we had these for lunch sometimes and also when we were feeling a bit peckish. Open 11.00am to 8.00pm. Meal times could be subject to change for all of the above. We grabbed an ice cream from time to time from Swirls Ice Cream Bar. The International Cafe on Deck 5 24 hr. It's nice to sit in this area and have a cuppa with friends, listen to music or glaze out at the ocean. They have a selection of cakes, cheeses, sandwiches, buns. No additional cost. However you pay for your coffee and tea. There are package deals you can get for your drinks. One includes a coffee card for speciality coffees, tea, hot chocolate. We ate once in the Sterling Steakhouse, due to a free invitation. There is a wide variety of steaks you can choose from. But unless you are really into your steaks, I don't see the point in paying extra money to eat here, when you get superb food and service in the dining rooms. Kai Sushi you pay extra to eat here. We are not big fans of sushi so we didn't eat here. ENTERTAINMENT: There is such a variety of entertainment to suite all age groups: Production Shows, Musicians, Comedians, Jugglers, Singers, movies in the room, theatre, or Pool Deck Under the Stars, games, carpet bowls, golf putting, Bingo. Water Volley Ball, Ping Pong, Shuffleboard, Teens Wii, Karaoke, Parties in the evening on pool deck., Trivia, Casino, Choir, Enrichment Programs, library, The list goes on. You can do as little or as much as you like. There is something there for everyone. We love the Wheelhouse Bar and thoroughly enjoyed the music of 2 Cool Duo and it was nice to sit and listen to them or do some moves on the floor. The production Shows: Piano Man, Shimmy, Save the last Dance, Counrty Jam, British Invasion, Sweet Soul Music are first class and I really enjoyed the talent of all the Princess Dancers and Singers and the Princess Orchestra of Musians. They do an amazing job and you can see how hard they work to entertain us. Juggler and Singer David DiMuzio was really amazing. Comedians Diane Cousins, Simon McKinney and Impresssionist, Danny McMaster had me in fits of laughter. Andy Joy Singer and Multi Instrumentalist was brilliant as was Volcalist, Beven Addinsal. Ace McDermott had me mesmerized with his magic show. Jane Cho, Electric Rock Violinist and the variety of music she could play with this instrument from Beatles, Queen, ACDC ect just blew me away. The international Crew Show. The staff put on this show and there is certainly a lot of talent amongst them. The skit, When I was Apond the Sea, is hilarious and is a regular skit Princess out on. Cruise Director, Mark Turner has done a excellent job at putting all this entertainment together. I love the formal nights and on this cruise there were three. I love getting dressed up and wearing my cocktail dresses. Cruising is an opportunity to wear all your lovely dresses even on casual nights. After the shows and entertainment, it's lovely just to stroll deck 7 outside before going to bed or go to the Wheelhouse Bar or Crooners Bar and listen to music and do a bit of dancing. During the day we loved making use of the pool area and the pool and Spas at the back of the ship is where we like to head and take in a cocktail or two from the bar close by. Sometimes we will head to our room for a little snooze or watch current movies on demand. After breakfast we like to walk outside on deck 7 and do our mile walk, which is 3 laps around the ship. PORTS: I found the on shore excursions very expensive. We decided to only book excursions for Komodo, Ujung Pandang, Semarang and Lombok. We did Probolinggo and Bali on our own. You just have to make sure that you allow plenty of time to get back to the ship on time, because they will leave without you, if you are not on an organized tour arranged by Princess. The main attraction for Probolinggo is Mt Bromo where there is an active volcano. We didn't go on this tour because of the price $370.00 Per person and part of this tour was cancelled due to the volcano being too active. Normally you would go by four wheel drive, donkey and then climb 250 steps to the rim. You only went by four wheel drive to a safe distance to see Mt Bromo. We just wondered around the town and took a tri-taxi back (push bike with a cart) this was all part of the experience and good fun. Komodo and Pink Beach tour were excellent but be quick because Pink Beach is very popular and this tour sells out quickly. Pink Beach has crystal clear water and excellent for snorkeling, it has to be one of the best snorkeling spots with all sorts of colorful corals and tropical fish, that I've snorkeled on. You can't go to Komodo Island unless you are on a tour, so you can't do this on your own. All the ports I went to were interesting, it's a matter picking a tour that best suites your interests. You just have to remember that this is a third world country and facilities are not the same as back home. Experiencing different cultures is all part of the fun and you need to go with the flow. It does make you appreciate what we have back home. We were absolutely spoilt on this cruise and can't wait to be on another.

Cabin Review

Balcony
Cabin BE C544
We had a balcony stateroom on 9th deck. Nice clean tidy and comfortable, a little tired due to age of ship, but did not detract from the overall experience. Regularly serviced twice a day by Carmelo our steward. Special touches of chocolates on the bed in the evening was delightful.
