AMA Prima. All river cruises are tight quarters and while this ship has a small lift, expect narrow stairs onboard and possibly multiple stairs when tied next to another ship at a port as one passes through the adjoining ship and may require up and over passage. The central european staff was generally young, professional, well managed and hard working. The recommended tip amounts are a minimum, the final evening has an hour long all hands staff parade to remind passengers to be fair in account settling. My lower cabin was quiet despite being close to mechanicals and being the dark of winter, a window not missed. Dim lighting in the small cabin. The TV was unavailable, internet very limited. I fully agree with the "BermudaMom" review post of this same cruise and would add: a) smokers & a cigar smoker took over the public front deck and b) a few passengers' alcohol fueled behavior was obnoxious and should have been reigned in. It's close quarters living.
Breakfast is table service with buffet: eggs to order, euro and north american options, oatmeal (porridge) available and an expansive breads/sweets selections. Lunch is a quick soup or salad in the lounge or a seated menu in the dining room. The very popular late afternoon tea is sweets and tea sandwiches and became my lunch choice or dinner substitute. While dinner was excellent, I found the nightly 2 hour seating tedious and there's no short course seating option. Food is excellent, a bit salty, lots of sauces and wonderful, generous desserts. Fellow travelers dressed informally, a nod to luggage weight restrictions.
My interest was the Christmasmarkets and the schedule allowed plenty of time as most markets are fairly small, overall an enjoyable itinerary. I fully appreciated the choice of walking speeds on tours and appreciated this AMA feature most. The bikes are adequately maintained coaster type and were a pleasant break from the port routines. Provided maps were adequate for individual exploring. I recommend AMA, but would consider possible river height effect on the itinerary and disapointed my use of public spaces was limited by the large special interest group activity.
Local handcraft market at city gate, otherwise holiday stalls through the square. St Sebald near the main square has significant WW2 postings Nuremberg angel, look for prune people and the noon moving figure church tower at the main square.
One comes across several markets moving through the squares, Thurn und Taxis is a fee market but excellent and lovely. Lots of narrow old lanes & windows to wander.
Busy old town, green market & holiday markets, "Krampus", amazing cemetary. We stayed in the old town area for the afternoon. McDonalds has a clean pay toilet, one can use the receipt as a coupon.
"hidden Vienna". Jewish quarters, catacomb & lower chambers of the cathedral. Mozart house. excellent, especially if one has been to Vienna before.
baroque beyond baroque, doesn't take long.
Central europe. Good craft choices in market. We were given the wrong bus number by the Hilton Buda and miserably lost in a tough area of town, english spoken by some younger Hungarians...not in the back areas or older adults. Buy the transportation day pass if you find a kiosk and get a good map. Standard watch your pockets caution. Pest side has more to see, Buda lovely after dark. St. Mattheus is packed with tour groups, find a corner & just admire the walls. Jozsef Szabo for 4am airport tranfer, 30e and highly reliable. cab@businesscab.hu
