  3. Pride of America
From first booking until disembarking after the cruise, we enjoyed the Pride of America cruise of the Hawaiian Islands. Communication was good, getting on and off the ship was easy. The destinations were fantastic. Entertainment in the theater was excellent, especially "Oh What a Night" The quality of food and service in the main dining rooms was varied, healthy choices, and attentive wait staff. The EXCEPTION was the La Cucina Italian restaurant. The waitress could neither speak nor understand English. Menu choice were limited. The ones we did chose were prepared with spices and ingredients which resembled no other Italian restaurant we had been to, and we could not eat them, Left on the plate. Steak was totally full of gristle. We left, and promptly cancelled all other specialty restaurants that we had reserved for the remainder of the cruise, returning to the complimentary ones. The buffet items were well prepared, and good choices. However, getting a seat in the Aloha Cafe, even a handicapped one, was taking our lives into our own hands. The other ship's guests seemed to have no regard for the disabled. And the staff did nothing to aid us in getting food or a table. Our stateroom steward was great, quick response to all our requests. The one area where we feel that this and all cruises could come up with a better plan for a non-alcoholic beverage plan that is more economical for soft drinks, greater selection of sugar-free, and full glass of soda, that is not 2/3 ice for the prices they charge and not even a single refill! Also, if the only free beverages served were coffee, tea, ice tea and lemonade, they should be available in all restaurants and bars at all times of the day.

GREAT DESTINATION, GOOD STAFF, QUESTIONABLE SPECIALTY RESTAURANTS

  • Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
Excellent tour, best of our trip. Small group van tour. Personable, knowledgeable guide Vince took us off the beaten path to volcano and steam vent overlooks not shown to big coach tours. Excellent picnic lunch with catered sandwiches, plenty of native juices all served on table with linen tablecloths. Gave special assistance to disabled on trails through the park. Explained geothermal formations and native plants. Definitely more assistance than the big coach tours.

  • Pearl Harbor
Was not the fault of the cruise line, but weather prevented the boat launches to the Arizona Memorial. We were not informed when we booked that this could happen. The National Park Service film was good, but did not make up for the fact that we missed our primary reason for booking the tour.

  • Wailua River
Tour included views of waterfalls, a leisurely boat ride with local Hawaiian music and hula, and fern grotto. A laid back morning with lovely scenery. Again local guide who gave good historical perspective.

  • Waimea Canyon
Wish that there was some way could have driven to the end of the Waimea Canyon road for overlook with views of Na Pali Coast below, however coaches cannot travel the narrow roads. Views of the canyon with coloring of the rocks and vegetation are not to be missed. Our coach broke a tie rod, and we were very lucky to have make it up the steep grades and switch backs and back to lower levels, but our driver was very professional. Thank you.

  • Place of Refuge
Kona historic tour included small coffee plantations, Place of Refuge, St. Benedictine's Painted Church. Local guides on all Roberts Hawaii tours contribute greatly to the experience, Have good sense of humor as well. Most have lived in the islands all their lives, so get a feel for the island life from their perspective.

  • Luau
Fantastic setting, authentic atmosphere, excellent waitstaff, wonderful entertainment. Food was authentic, well prepared, not all to our liking, but that is personal preference, not the fault of the Old Lahaina Luau, which Maui locals rank as the best on Maui.
