I won't mention the name of my first cruise, but it was so bad that it took 25 years before I was willing to cruise again. This ship was chosen because we were going with Lonny Lynn Orchestra on a big band theme cruise.

I have read the reviews that have been written about this ship. I enjoyed my experience on board the ship. I hated the awful embarkation procedure. It was so chaotic that there was almost a riot of the people waiting in the large terminal to board the ship. The debarkation experience was slightly better. Once we were on board the ship, I enjoyed the restaurants and the buffet. We had requested an early designated time for dinner in the restaurant, so we had the same wait staff every night. They were fabulous ~ friendly, attentive, courteous. I was very impressed with the staff. Our food was very good every night. We dined at the special steak house one night. It was an enjoyable evening.

We had 2 nights of formal which I think is ridiculous for cruise ships to think that we should bring on board all of the items needed for formal attire. I prefer the types of cruise ships that no longer require formal. Country Club casual should be good enough.

The bathroom was adequate, basic and functional. The bed was wonderful. Great sleeping after very active days on excursions. The cabin had a very large closet with great storage in the closet and the shelving between the closet and the bathroom. Additional storage is available in the bedside table and the desk in the cabin.

We had a very friendly and considerate cabin steward. We had plenty of ice delivered to our cabin. My husband must have a CPAP machine for sleeping. I had requested distilled water for the machine when I was making the arrangements. It was in our room when we arrived.

The Golden Princess has very large verandas. Since we were in Alaska, and the weather was frequently rainy and windy, we didn't make much use of our veranda except see the ports as we arrived and departed each.

Juneau

We hiked from the Visitor's Center to the end of Glacier Spur Road to get a close up experience at Mendenhall Glacier.

We took the self-guided tour of Mendenhall Glacier. Caught the Blue Glacier Express bus with a great bus driver who narrated our trip to Mendenhall Glacier. We visited the glacier and the on-site museum. Read information provided on TripAdvisor for information about this self-guided tour. You can pick up tickets for the Blue Express bus and similar buses to Mendenhall right on the port terminal.

My experience with Dyea Dave was not so great, but other people on our van tour raved about the experience. you can read my review on TripAdvisor which goes into great detail about my personal experience. My recommendation is do NOT sit in the back of the van.

Loved it! The cruise was through beautiful scenery. The narration on board was by members of the First tribe. The cruise boat took us right up to the sights in the fjords. Food is available on board and included with the price of the ticket.
