First Time Cruisers
Well we were pleasantly surprised. Like yourself we read many reviews before we left and were apprehensive as a result. Though felt quite relieved from the start that our experience would be a positive one. Our 10 day cruise was bookend-ed by 2 weeks in China and 4 days in Singapore (self travel)
Pre-cruise - good communication via email from the cruise line
Cruise terminal - we arrived and the bags were taken straight from our cab to loading
once inside we were directed (there were plenty of staff to provide direction/support) to complete paperwork did our registration and were on the ship within one and half hours of arrive - very efficiently done
Cabin - state room with balcony room was larger then we expected - plenty of room and storage. Beds were not that comfortable - we are not big people though it was obvious that the previous guest have been as the mattress were sagging in the middle
bathroom OK size - I am (male 5'10 82 KG) the shower was fine, nice water pressure and plenty of hot water. bigger people will find the shower cubicle small.
Dinning - plenty of choices we ate mostly in Romeo and Juliette (my time dining) we normally booked a time during the day and never had to wait. Food quality was OK lots of choices about a 3 star dining - great wait staff
Buffet was really surprised by the amount of choices available and there were always healthy food options and sugar free options available
Chefs table great food and worth the money
Drinks - we did not do the drinks package as we were under the impression that both of us would have had to do it - this was not the case. to make the package worth while I figured I would have to drink at least 8 beers a day ($6 US a beer) there were a number of days when i had a drink with dinner and that was all so the package would not have been worth while
Water dispensers were available though there were only a couple for the entire ship (we took drink bottles and then just filled them up) at the drinks station there was also free tea and coffee, ice, lemonade (none carbonated) and iced tea.
Entertainment - I thought it was OK my wife thought it was amateurish certainly some of the feature acts were very entertaining
Gym - it was small (based on what others have said) though I never had issues with having to wait to get onto equipment
Public rooms - lots of options available - only real disappointment was that the two pools were relatively small
Shore excursions - we did not do any as we are experienced independent travelers so we did our own thing without issue. Feedback from people we spoke to was that the excursions were not value for money
Staff - all positive, friendly, polite and engaging. Staff came from all over the world English is the primary language though many of the staff can speak a second language as well
Other passengers - over 50 countries represented mainly from Australia, North America, Philippines and Europe. We saw a lot of kids at the beginning though obviously the kids clubs were great as we rarely saw kids throughout the cruise
Would I go on a cruise again - I will though no time soon. I enjoyed the days at sea very relaxing and lots of options to do things or do nothing. I can really see the attraction for a wide variety of people older travelers, people with mobility challenges people who want a holiday that requires little planning on their behalf as a cruise has so much to offer (esp for parents with little kids as they said the kids loved the kids club and always wanted to go there rather then hang out with the parents).
I have done a lot of extended traveling so the port days were for me were just a tease. In reality I prefer to spend longer exploring the countries you go to then quick day trips (5- 7 hours) into ports
