  3. Norwegian Sun
This was our first time cruising with NCL having sailed only with Princess on prior cruises. We went with no expectations and tried "not" to compare the Sun to the three Princess ships we had sailed but did find ourselves comparing a few times. Overall though we were very happy with the experience on board. A much more laid back crowd but then I guess that is what Freestyle cruising is all about. The ship, although a little smaller than the Grand, Golden and Ruby is still a large ship with plenty to keep you busy while at sea. Pool areas were often full during sea days with the good weather but generally were able to find a couple of seats within a short amount of time. Thought the entertainment was good with variety, They changed it up once or twice during the 11 days and brought new entertainers aboard. Food in the dining rooms was excellent IMO, and lunch and dinner in the Garden Cafe was generally quite good as well. The exact same breakfast options everyday get's to be a little boring, but, Princess was no different. We also had the free Ultimate Beverage Package which unlike Princess does not include bottled water, sparkling water or specialty coffees but considering they were throwing it in free with the room I'm not about to complain. We booked a guaranteed inside cabin but they dropped the price dramatically after booking so we called and were upgraded to a picture window ocean view ob deck 9 which was very nice. Enjoyed all ports of call. Acapulco, Manazanillo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. Really not much to see in Manzanillo and all the newest development and resorts are to the North of the Port, although the old downtown is right in Port. All the staff for the most part were friendly. Jonas, Keiran. Elizabeth, Lucas at the bars were our favorite. Dining staff was good. And my wife really loved Encep our room steward who had a different Towel Animal each night we returned to our room. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our experience aboard NCL and I would sail with them again, especially if the price is right.

Quite Enjoyed

Cabin Review

Cabin OA 9210
Thought the cabin was reasonably spacious, shower though was a little tight and we are not big people. Smaller than I remember the Princess cruises showers being, but in the big picture a minor detail.

The tour was excellent, as well as the guide. Only complaint was that Pepe had no amplified speaker system so those at the back of the van weren't able to hear much of what he had to say. I think that is because we were a larger group from the ship (40+) and Rudy had to bring in extra vans and guides.

Mixed feelings on this one. This was supposed to be a city tour combined with a afternoon snorkeling tour. The problem, NCL did not inform us of the 1 hour ahead time change the previous night so consequently we were late getting of the ship which is already tendered and adds to the time to get to shore. That said the tour operator indicated our meet time was 10:20. We arrived at the location at 10:00 and our guide had clearly been there awhile waiting for us. The snorkeling boat departure was around 11:00 so we basically had less than an hour to see the city. We passed on the flea market as we were interested in shopping but wanted to see the city. We did stop for a quick Tequila making tour and then had to basically head back to the marina to catch our boat. The tour normally includes a trip to a glass factory as well but they did tell us up front it would closed on the Sunday. Good thing I guess because we would not have had any time to go there and still catch our boat.
So forget the city tour because we paid extra for nothing.
That aside the Snorkeling tour itself and the staff aboard the boat were amazing. They took us to Chileno bay were we spent about 40 - 45 minutes snorkeling. The water was nice and clear and the beauty and variety of fish to be seen was awesome. They feed you unlimited drinks and a buffet lunch after the snorkel adventure and provide some fun entertainment on the upper deck during the return trip. Well worth it.

Short Cruise, large bus lot's of people with the usual shopping stops and one stop to eat. Not much to see here but it was still alright. We are generally not big on the ship tour's or sheep's tours as the cost is often 40% or more than the same or equal private tours and are usually larger groups on big buses. It was a convenience issue here as again there wasn't a lot to see or do in Manzanillo unless you wanted to travel to Colima.

Again, private tour, smaller bus/van means fewer people and a little more flexibility. Overall happy with this tour and would recommend. At $27USD it was a great value IMO.

Would have been even more excellent had the weather cooperated but this was our only port where we had rain. That said the rain did stop shortly after arriving at our destination and although it remained mostly overcast the sun tried real hard to poke through. It was still warm, the water was real warm and there were lot's of water activities to do. Snorkeling, water boards, kayaks. There was always someone there to offer a drink and an excellent buffet lunch was included as well. Your own little piece of paradise for a day. Would highly recommend.

We actually booked a three night stay post cruise at the Best Western Plus Hacienda in Old Town. They offer shuttle service to and from the Cruise port and airport. We didn't realize that so took the Green Line Trolley to the Old Town Terminal and walked. Arrived around 11:00 and were able to immediately check into our room. We explored Old Town that day. Took the Old Town Hop On, Hop Off trolley around town the following day and spent $7 including Compass card for an all day San Diego Metro day pass. Rode the Green Line out to Santee, the Orange Line back into town hopped on a bus that took us up to Balboa Park and wandered around. Wanted to take the Blue Line all the way down to The Mexican border but ran out of time. Really loved San Diego and everything is close and easily accessible but trolley or bus. Highly recommend the Hop On, Hop Off.
