This was our first time cruising with NCL having sailed only with Princess on prior cruises. We went with no expectations and tried "not" to compare the Sun to the three Princess ships we had sailed but did find ourselves comparing a few times.
Overall though we were very happy with the experience on board. A much more laid back crowd but then I guess that is what Freestyle cruising is all about.
The ship, although a little smaller than the Grand, Golden and Ruby is still a large ship with plenty to keep you busy while at sea. Pool areas were often full during sea days with the good weather but generally were able to find a couple of seats within a short amount of time.
Thought the cabin was reasonably spacious, shower though was a little tight and we are not big people. Smaller than I remember the Princess cruises showers being, but in the big picture a minor detail.
We actually booked a three night stay post cruise at the Best Western Plus Hacienda in Old Town. They offer shuttle service to and from the Cruise port and airport. We didn't realize that so took the Green Line Trolley to the Old Town Terminal and walked. Arrived around 11:00 and were able to immediately check into our room. We explored Old Town that day. Took the Old Town Hop On, Hop Off trolley around town the following day and spent $7 including Compass card for an all day San Diego Metro day pass. Rode the Green Line out to Santee, the Orange Line back into town hopped on a bus that took us up to Balboa Park and wandered around. Wanted to take the Blue Line all the way down to The Mexican border but ran out of time. Really loved San Diego and everything is close and easily accessible but trolley or bus. Highly recommend the Hop On, Hop Off.
