We enjoy cruising, visiting & experiencing the sights and sounds, not to mention the food, of places which we have never been to. We have cruised the Mediterranean several times, but not with Israel on the itinerary. As such, I would say we went on this cruise because of Israel. We embarked our ship in Rome, sailed to Naples, spent 2 nights in Ashdod, went to Haifa, then to Kusadasi, then to Mykonos, sailed to Athens, then to Malta & finally back to Rome.
We did both private & ships' shore excursions and thoroughly enjoyed both. We did Naples, Haifa & Mykonos on our own, but if there is a next time, we would go on a private or ship's excursion in Haifa, as it was very hilly to walk. Notwithstanding the situation in Israel, we felt safe in every port that we visited. We booked a ship's excursion to the "Blue Grotto" for Malta, but on tour day, were advised that we could not go into the grotto due to the water being too high or rough sea (can't remember). Kudos should be given to Celebrity that they were going to credit us back 20% plus an extended time for viewing the grotto from the outside, exchange our tickets for another tour or full refund without penalty. Not sure what a private tour would have done.
The Silhouette was the newest & largest ship that we have been on. We thought being on a full ship, that it would be too crowded, but were pleasantly surprised to the contrary. We also liked that the Silhouette was modern, bright & airy, compared to the other ships that we have cruised on. The staff on board were friendly & courteous, which reflects down from our "Greek" captain who was always hilarious!
Cabin 8110 is on deck 8, underneath the "wing" area of the navigational deck of the ship. There is no obstruction, unless you want to look straight up to the upper decks from the balcony. Our room was generally very quiet, except when the ship begins to dock. That is when you will hear & feel the front propellers in action. Call it an early morning "wake up" if you will. Needless to say, cabin 8110 is on the opposite end to where the dining room & buffet are located. It is a fair walk, but hey you're on vacation & eating, eating, eating...good to burn off a few calories.
The room itself is standard & more than adequate for 2. The bed is high enough off the floor where you can slide under 2 full size suitcases. This is a good thing, as the closet itself, although suffice if you're not a heavy packer, will be very cluttered, if not impossible to put your suit cases in. Just above the bed are 2 rectangular cupboards for storage. There are 3 large drawers, versus the 4 - 5 little ones that we're accustomed too. Not a big deal for guys, as I just shoved everything in one drawer & left the other two for my wife. There is a full size sofa facing a flat screen TV. The balcony is more than adequate for 2, with 2 chairs & round table.
The bathroom was of fair size with a large non-claustrophobic shower.
Went to Herculaneum on our own. A condensed version of Pompeii & well preserved. The entrance is free for EVERYBODY on the 1st Sunday of each month and was very busy when we arrived at approximately 11 AM. When we left about 1 PM, there was little to no line up. Fortunately, we were able to obtain a private guide & skipped the line up.
We walked around the areas near the cruise terminal & managed to get to the base of the gardens. It was very hot & hilly.
We should have taken an excursion.
Always enjoyed visiting Mykonos, poking around the stores & eating.
