We booked our first HAL cruise (22 night Mediterranean) with a little apprehension after reading the many mediocre reviews on this site. I will preface this review by saying that my husband and I are both 47 and our main concern was that the ship would be old and tired and the clientele ready for the nursing home!

We have cruised with Royal Caribbean on 5 previous occasions, and with Celebrity and Princess once each. We stayed in cabin 7145 which is an aft balcony and we were very pleasantly surprised. The cabin was great with comfy bed and pillows, well designed storage, a bathroom with full bath and a HUGE balcony (due to its position on the ship) complete with sun loungers.

The cabin attendants were first class, and all staff greeted you with a genuine smile and hello whenever you walked past.

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom

Cabin VB

Loved this cabin! This was our first time in an aft cabin (usually choose mid ship) and it was great. Oversized balcony complete with sun lounger and tables and chairs. Very quiet, great room attendants and fantastic view! Very little movement felt whilst sailing. I would DEFINITELY travel in this cabin again.

Port Reviews

Dubrovnik

Wandered the town. Walked the city walls, then returned at night for some amazing night photos!

Kotor

Gorgeous port! Walked the town. Climbed the 1000 or so steps up to the lookout. Great day.

Split

Unfortunately it rained heavily most of the day here. Checked out the main sights but the weather made everything a bit difficult.

Venice

Clocked up over 30km of walking over the 2 days here! Checked out all the main sites including St Marks square and Rialto Bridge. Caught the Vaporetto to Murano. Went back at night to see the city all lit up.

Katakolon (Olympia)

Caught the train to Olympia and toured the site. Not much left to see. Enjoyed running on the sprint track!

Athens (Piraeus)

Caught the public bus and train from the Port to Athens. Visited the Acropolis and Plaka. Checked out all the main sites. Quite crowded but that is to be expected.

Rhodes

Having visited Rhodes previously, we caught a public bus to Lindos. AMAZING town!!!! The BEST sandy beach we witnessed on the whole cruise, quaint whitewashed town, stunning views, and a fort.

Santorini

Wow! Wow! Wow! Caught the public bus to Oia and spent most of the day there. Took hundreds of photos!!!! Walked back down the donkey trail (15 mins) to avoid the gondola queue.

Istanbul

Visited the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia, the Underground Cistern, the Grand Bazaar and the walked to Taksim Square at night.

Malta (Valletta)

Caught a taxi to Blue Grotto. Continued on to MDina by public bus. Walked the old city and St Paul's Catacombs. Then, a taxi back to Valletta to explore.
