  3. Viking Sun (Retired)
Rhine Discovery (Rhine Getaway), Basel to Amsterdam, October 2015 on the Viking Sun. Just returned from the holiday. Second tine with Viking but as this was a different class of ship at a different time of year I’m not going to compare the two. In short, brilliant!! The Sun is an older ship but it was difficult to tell. Clean, light and comfortable with all public areas well appointed, 2 dining areas, the main restaurant for a served meal with an alternative lunch menu in the lounge. Stateroom - We had the basic room 170 sq ft with water level window. More than enough room, again very well appointed (no fridge unfortunately). Food - outstanding in every respect. Plenty of choice, beautifully prepared and presented. Chef Mario and his team have many other choices available (not necessarily on the menu) and also catered for those with allergies, etc. Complimentary wine - good quality and continually on offer during meal times. Staff - worked extremely hard to make sure we were well looked after. Our maid (Jenny) was excellent, visiting the stateroom several times every day ensuring the room was always tidy. Service staff likewise, waiters/waitresses attentive and always on hand as were the bar staff. Programme Director (Boyan) and Concierge (Andrea, I think, apologies if this is not spelt correctly) did not stop working to ensure the holiday was a complete success and nothing was too much trouble. Entertainment - Excellent pianist in the lounge. Eccentric to say the least. He was not just a classical pianist, this guy could play anything. We had Elton John (with the big glasses), Elvis (with the wig), Robbie Williams and a host of others. Final night party was particularly good. Other events and presentation were also very informative. Ports of call and tours - interesting places and the tours (by bus and on foot) were well organised and informative. Could have been a bit warmer but that’s what you risk if you book in October. The weather is probably the one thing Viking can’t do anything about. Value for money - what I paid for what I got was outstanding value. In summary - Considering the time of year (with the cooler weather) we had a great time, met some interesting people, saw some beautiful cities and eat some fantastic food. The Sun is leaving the Viking fleet at the end of 2015, but that is no refection of the state of the ship nor the service on board. Thanks (again) Viking, we’ll be back.
