I need to preface this review, in that it has been over 30 years since my wife and I have been on a cruise, and a lot has changed. We had a great time on our 7 day Alaskan Cruise, but it took a little time to get use to the size of the ship, the last one being less than a third the size. Check in went as well as can be expected considering the number of people getting on the ship. Our room was ready soon after we boarded, about 10 minutes. Be aware security confiscated all power strips prior to boarding (you got them back upon departure), but were allowing 3 plug extension cords. The service was great; everywhere from our room to the many dining rooms, the crew went out of their way to ensure that we had a great time. Be warned though, some of the crew were hard to understand (language barrier), but most of the time it didn’t make much of an inconvenience. There were many activities available for a wide variety of fun. The ship was beautiful with many areas designated for walking, running, shuffleboard, checkers, but our main goal was to just simply relax. So, we spent a lot of time in the library for the peace and quiet. I would recommend this cruise to anyone.

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony
Cabin MB 11522
We had room 11522, mini-suite with balcony; comfy beds, great view, and a nice bathroom with a tub (note; the facet is very unusual, (temperature control) but once you figure its okay). Room was near the forward elevators which we thought might be an issue, but did not hear much outside noise. One of the good things about being forward was that we didn’t have to wait long for an elevator. Had a problem with the air conditioning, but were able to work it out in a couple of days. The only issue I have (small one) is that I wish that announcements would be made inside the cabin, by the time you hear it outside in the hall, and get to the proper TV channel, it is over (the only time there was an announcement that we heard in our cabin it was a mistake). Be aware that this is the last cabin balcony before the overhang from the 12th deck begins.

  • Glacier Bay
This was the best part of the cruise. The glaciers and the mountains were breathtaking. The weather was overcast with a little drizzle, so this is where the balcony came in great, no crowds just a couple of hours while ship rotated three times. Took a lot of pictures that day.

  • Juneau
We took the free shuttle from the pier and were dropped off at the base of the Tram. We walked up thru the town where we bought a bunch of candy at the Alaskan Fudge Company, great store. We visited some shops, but basically they were all selling the same thing. Since it was September, there were a number of end of season sales. There were 3 ships in port so it was still busy and crowded.

  • White Pass Scenic Railway
We took the combined White Pass Scenic Railway and suspension bridge tour. The scenery throughout the tour was breathtaking even though the weather was overcast throughout the tour, and with a little drizzle in Skagway. We caught the tour bus right by pier which took us to the train depot for the trip up the valley following the Skagway River. We climbed from the depot to the White Pass Summit, little over 2800 feet in 20 miles. The valley views and trestles were all spectacular. Once we were at the summit the trip continued on via bus to the suspension bridge. The bridge was very interesting with numerous opportunities for pictures, and a great story of why it was there. Got to spend a little over an hour there, which is more than enough time for pictures and a quick bite to eat at the restaurant or a quick snack. Don’t let a little bad weather stop you; this tour was well worth it.
