We sailed on the NCL Getaway round trip Miami, departing on 26 SEP 15. We booked two rooms. The first a Large Balcony and the second an Interior Cabin for our two 18 year old grandsons. Both spaces were adequate for our needs. The balcony was much larger than most of the balconies found on the ship. The balcony size was a very important function in our cabin selection. During this cruise, unfortunate weather conditions caused the cancellation of our port call in the Bahamas. Our cruise was selected based primarily on going to the Bahamas, so there was some disappointment with that decision. The port day then became a sea day. The places visited then were St. Thomas, USVI and Tortola, BVI.
St Thomas was pleasant as we took a taxi tour of the island. In Tortola, we went on the snorkel and Virgin Gordo Baths tour. I'd like to write a little about that excursion. There is no dock on VG near the Baths. We had to swim ~200 yards to the beach in our snorkel gear. Since I wear glasses, they remained on the boat. Also, since we did not have water resistant cameras, they remained on the boat too. All that remains is my slightly blurry images imprinted in my mind. If you were to choose this excursion, please be a little better prepared and bring along sealable containers. There is considerable climbing over and under rocks on this tour. I still loved this tour and would recommend it to others. The snorkel portion was OK, and is mostly a swim in the warm water where you may find a few fish. Separately, my wife shopped in Tortola. She found very few shops. They had little selections and high prices. It seems Tortola was filled with bars and banks. She purchased nothing. [First time ever!]
As for the Getaway, here are a couple of observations. There are only two banks of stairwells / elevators. They are about 35% and 60% forward on the ship. We found ourselves constantly backtracking to those areas to change levels. We prefer ships with additional stairwells. Eating at O'Sheehans was good [Deck 7], but it is perhaps the noisiest place on the ship as there is considerable noise bleed from the atrium. I understand their plan is for a grand open space, but noise abatement should be strongly considered between those two spaces. The same atrium noise issue was prevalent in the cruise directors/excursion desks. [Deck 6] If you want to conduct business with the staff, do so when nothing is happening in the atrium, otherwise you may have to shout to communicate with them. We loved Legally Blond, Burn the Floor and the Grammy Experience. There are many reviews opining about those shows, so I will not elaborate. The ropes course was a lot of fun. Your pockets must be emptied. We discovered that fact after waiting in line for nearly thirty minutes. They said no cameras, but if you search U-Tube, you can find hours of videos on the course.
Very adequate. Enjoyed the large balcony. Bathroom is somewhat small, but functionally adequate. Plenty of closet space. We had no noise issues with entertainment venues or dining rooms as this cabin is well removed from those areas. There were ample receptacles to reenergize our electronic devices. The room was kept clean per NCL's standards.
$20 US per person two hour taxi tour, better than walking in the heat.
