This was our first time on a HAL ship. We actually chose the Veendam over its sister ship, Maasdam, because of the two night scheduled stay in the beautiful city of Quebec. Prior to boarding, we spent a night at a very nice boutique hotel, Hotel Champlain, located in Old Quebec and about ten minutes from the cruise terminal. We chose the "Red Bus" during one of our two days in Quebec for a very nice tour of the city. HAL did an excellent job of providing the local embarkation personnel with all materials required. Embarkation was very quick and without any trouble.
Even though considered a smaller ship by today's standards, the Veendam sailed very well. We even had ten foot seas with barely any motion felt in our cabin. My DW did the Culinary Arts cooking demonstration that we had read about. Signing up for it was the first thing we did after boarding as there are only 12 spaces each for the two demonstrations offered. With regards to activity I like to kid about eating until I fall asleep - and sleeping until I was hungry. We ordered room service for coffee each morning before going to breakfast which arrived on time each time. The Happy Hour was conveniently timed for leaving port each day, and with our late Dining seating, the appetizers were appreciated.
We booked two shore excursions through HAL, one in Charlottetown, PEI, and one in Bar Harbor, ME. Both were very good and well run.
We were impressed with the amount of room the Vista Suite offered. We were never in each others way and, even though sometimes the outside temperature was cold, utilized the decent-sized verandah. A nice touch is the teak decks, and cushions for the chairs. All of the plumbing and lighting worked without a problem. The bed was very comfortable, and it was nice to be able to choose between three different levels of firmness for the pillows. I chose Firm and DW chose Medium. This cabin does have the bed and couch facing backwards but that didn't matter to us.
With regards to location, I like to be aft of the midship-stabilizer as I feel the ride is better there. That comes from experience while serving on a CG cutter and sleeping in the aft berthing space. This is on the port side of the ship which happens to be where the harbor pilots board so we would briefly hear the pilot boat. It actually served to alert us that we would be in port in less than an hour.
Great cabin and I would choose it again.
The "Red Bus" tour is very convenient and priced reasonably. Quebec is a lovely city with a lot of history.
A nice view of the countryside while visiting two historical lighthouses and a local winery.
A community that is extremely friendly and appreciative of cruise ship visitors.
Weather did not cooperate but it is a very interesting city to visit.
A ride to the top of Cadillac Mountain was paired with a pleasant lunch at Jordan Pond house.
Very quick disembarkation.
