Sailed through Sydney harbour at sunset, beautiful as always. Spent a day in Brisbane, we are locals so just hung around the port and had relatives and friends come to visit for the day. Next stop Alotau, tropical, steamy, hazy, primitive, untouched, friendly, very cute young locals and Great War history. Did the ship Milne Bay war history tour which we really enjoyed, very informative. Onto Doini Island, this place is straight out of a National Geographic film shoot, stunningly perfect, great snorkelling and swimming though the undertow makes it a it hard to get out of the water, watch that if a bit unsteady on your feet. There will be local markets here, take some Kina to donate to the local church and school groups. Kiriwina Island next, unfortunately the tide was out so swimming was out, once again, local markets set up, there is a village and school here. Plenty of space to sit on the beach and relax or get involved with the he locals. Rabaul, land of the earthquake and active volcano, we did the Volcanological Centre tour which we really enjoyed, saw the tunnels, Seismic centre, crashed planes, thermal springs and the volcano, which was just across the water. Very privileged to be so close. Once again, lots of locals have come out to set up their market stalls and perform, you will need more Kina and treats for the kids. The weather stopped us going to Solomon Islands which was disappointing but we had five days at sea instead, sea days are always great. This is our third Princess cruise, it's been five years and in that time we felt service had slipped as had the food in MDR. Not a lot but noticeable, it's definitely not as good as it was. We loved this cruise, the destination was what it's all about, history buffs and nature lovers will love it. Just don't expect western comforts, this is a third world country, the people who live here are happy, you should be too, you're on holidays.
