The royal princess 12 nt british isles cruise aug 13 had a great port every day except for two sea days! this itinerary can be exhausting to get up early every day to be ready for another shore excursion that is generally eight or even nine hours in most cases in order to make the most of the opportunities of that port! This is why we chose to do two back to back cruises with the same itinerary in order to alternated long shore excursion days with "walk of the ship with no plans day". that provided a sense of resting even when you still do a lot. Of course, there is so much to see and do that even two days at each port barely scratches the surface of such wonderful places like ireland, scotland, wales, orkney islands, guernsey islands, and england! Then highlights of the aug 13th leg was the military royal tatoo at edinburgh castle with vip seating and the vip reception following the production done through princess shore excursions. the price was big and the above was a once in a lifetime, but the shore excursions staff on the royal princess really dropped the ball in handeling a vip event! at $800 per person, they herded us in like everyone that paid hundreds less into the princess theater, split the vip group of 50 into three group numbers causing confusion without explainations in the auditorium, failed to provide an escort for our mini van group from the auditorium to the van, failed to provide umbrellas to the vans in pouring rain, split us up into little mini vans with crowded small seating for the majority of the passengers, and did not provide one bite of food or even a cheap plastic bottle of water to us for a two hour transfer to the show. for $50 more per person and leaving an hour earlier, we would have avoided the rush hour traffic of dublin and arrived early in time for a lovely dinner in the castle prior to the event! at $799 per person that shore excursions charged the fifty guests who went, what is another fifty dollars to do it right?! Anyone going next year should absolutely go to the royal military tatoo web site and book your own vip dinner, vip seating and reception for four hundred less per person and arrange your own private car to and from and still save two hundred! the only reason to book with the ship shore excursions is the guarantee that the ship will wait for you and that is a very good reason as one of the three vip mini vans broke down and theses $800 per person guests did not make it back to the ship until three oclock in the morning! certainly hope they got their money back! Having said all above, the other shore excursions were wonderful and provided excellent experiences. My favorite shore excursion was our trip to luss in a scotland national park, loch lomond, inveraray, and tour of inveraray castle which was used for a season special in downton abby. to everyone's great surprise, the duke of argyle was working in the castle gift shop greeting his guests from the ship! it was a great honor to meet the duke in person and he graciously agreed to a selfee photo with me! The royal princess was a beautiful and lovely ship in every way except the mid ship elevators have no stairway, which not only made the ship unsafe in an emergency, but kept the elevators jammed packed every time you needed to go even one floor for, in our case, thrity nine nights! terrible! We heard that princess plans to dry dock the ship and open up central staircase in november and we certainly all hope that is true! May we say that with the exception of shore excursion department staff, the service of the entire crew of the royal princess was the best in nearly two hundred cruises! The captain, bob oliver, provided the smoothest thirty nine days and nights of sailing in our thirty years of cruising! he is one of the nicest and most professional captains that we have ever had the pleasure to know and we will book cruises again just to be with he and his staff and crew!
