Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Jan 2009
  • Destination: the Southern Caribbean
  • Cabin Type: Balcony

I purchased our Southern Caribbean cruise last March directly with Princess for our Jan 02/09 cruise. With Great advice from CC roll call members I was able to secure a great reduction 2 months prior to sailing .So roll calls do help !!!We were on Caribe deck forward near elevators .Loved Caribe balconies for early morning breakfast and late night star gazing and sunset watching. We stayed in Fll on Jan 1 at a La Quinta Inn in FLL after a lively New Year's Party the night before.Left Burlington Vermont on Jet Blue at 11;30 .Flights were bought last May and were much cheaper then out of Montreal. My only complaint is that Jet blue changed our return flights 7 times .WE ended up leaving FLL at 5 pm so took a Princess tour of Everglades and Flamingo Gardens .Really enjoyed it so our delay was OK .Jet blue personnel was real Cool about my excess luggage .I repacked at the airport and redistributed all weight .They let me use their scale to check each bag .VERY ACCOMMODATING ,GOOD JOB JET BLUE!!!!.Now get rid of FEES for second bag and I will be REAL pleased !!!.I paid those and we were off

Embarkation

We waited for our number to be called sitting comfortably .Painless- on board shortly after registration

Cabin

Slightly smaller then on CB .Beds comfortable BALCONY AWESOME!! Bad news CIGAR smoker next door .Due to poor ventilation system smell came thru air vent Permeated hallway and balcony .PRINCESS CHANGE YOUR SMOKING POLICY >NO MORE SMOKING IN ALL CABINS INCLUDING BALCONIES!!!!!!Nothing is quite as PUTRID as cigar smoke .With our advance knowledge of second hand smoke and its damages cruise lines should follow the trend set up by governments to reduce this danger by forbidding smoking in an area where non smokers are . Set up a private area on a high deck for smokers AWAy from the rest of us!!! .

We had a few issues with our toilets .They seem to choose when they would flush .When alerted the repairman did his best to fix it quickly .It was a little temperamental throughout the cruise .

Food

Was great everywhere .Dining was an Immense pleasure thanks to our great table companions Lois and Colin from England,Nasser and Manal from Virginia,Rod and Janet from Alberta .We joined their table on the second night as I like to watch the water from a window I requested be curtain-free in the evening .We had such a wonderful time we were always last to leave .Our waiters were very patient with our requests and late night chitchatting after dinner .Thanks to Ijuana and Vicente .Our table mates were most gracious to my 17 year old son and made him feel an integral part of the group for which I will remain ETERNALLY grateful .Because we got along so well we spent time on the islands together .WE had a BLAST everywhere .Thankfully the weather cooperated May I say that the food on Grand was AMAZING .Bravo to the chefs .I do not think we had 1 bad meal . Sabatini's was EXCEPTIONAL and our whole table went there one evening .WHAT A FEAST!!!! Worth every penny Truly enjoyed wine tasting twice .Learned something about wines and how sleepy it makes me Discovered 4;pm TEATIME with Lois and Colin .What a treat!!!!Highly recommend it to all to try

Islands were great .Trinidad scary due to a mugging .We chose to stay on ship .La Romana was a dreadful ride to BAYAHIBE .Unfortunately felt the natives constantly trying ti rip us off ,,,,not too pleasant!!! I was in DR 20 years ago .Not much has changed .The gov't still cuts water and electricity during the day ...poverty still prevalent Apparently Catalina a better choice as a beach ...next time!!!

Barbados Lobster Pot great beach with easy access to boats for snorkeling .Great fun to dive on ship wrecks .Coki Beach in St Thomas FABulous .St Kitts Cockleshell Beach not as good as before

Aruba and Curacao great

The shows we managed to see were fine .Enjoyed classical pianist and production shows .Never had a problem finding a seat after late dining

Casino slots REAL TIGHT .No drinks ever offered All in all a great cruise .Love long itineraries and in particular Southern Caribbean Yes Grand is showing its age but still a wonderful ship Shopping on board was enjoyable .Nice choices .Love last day bargains . Our excursion to Everglades with drop off at the airport very enjoyable very informative In conclusion Our tablemates and now new friends made our cruise very special. Our many adventures on these island will not soon be forgotten .I will remember fondly our best fish meal from the fish marketwith Lois and Colin overlooking the Caribbean in BarbADOS,Manal NON SWIMMER first time snorkeler FINDING HERSELF SO INTRIGUED BY THE UNDERWATER BEAUTY OF IT ALL floating way too far and getting Jer and Naser swimming to her rescue which she did not really need . Our tour of St Thomas . Many moments of great laughter ,great fun, great company All cruises should be this good !!!!
