We did the paper work and embarked quickly for our cruise to Norwegian fjords. We headed to our stateroom and found our luggage was already there. We decided to go and grab a bite of lunch before unpacking. Lunch in the Lido was quite nice. There were many choices so there were enough selections for everyone's taste. We then went back to unpack. We had a verandah room and we found it had a lot of storage space and hanging space. We put our suitcase under the bed after organizing our clothes. There were drawers under bottom of the bed and under the sofa we didn't even use. The bathroom had a bathtub...it was the nicest bathroom on any of the cruises we have been on. We found the room steward Augos and his assistant to be quite nice and professional. They filled our ice bucket twice a day and made the room clean and tidy while we were gone for the day. The choices at dinner in the main dining room at dinner were mostly quite good. There were a couple of misses, but for the most part we enjoyed it all. The service by Jono and Anto was amazing. My husband was gluten free and they were very accommodating. The first day the chef in the Lido went all around the buffet to show him the options he could have made GF. We very much appreciated that. The port we visited were beautiful. We booked our own tours at each of the ports so we can't speak to HAL's choices of excursions. If we had any complaints it would be the last day in Norway when there is a person who comes onboard before you leave port to help with VAT refund. We were told she would be there from 3pm-430pm. We cut short our time in Oslo to be back onboard at 315pm. The line was ridiculous! There were about 200people in line and it was moving at a snail's pace. After we stood for an hour another passenger happened by and told us if we didn't want cash back just a credit to the card we used we could fill out the paperwork and hand it in and bypass the line. Why didn't someone come through the line to tell people that sooner? We did that and were out of line in less than 5 mins. Our other frustration was in the port of Gothenburg,Sweden the ship docked about 5 mi. Outside of town in a container port. We knew this from other cruisecritic posts. However, no one from HAL was able to tell us how we could get to town.all we knew was the port wouldn't allow people to walk to the gate,it was quite a walk and not safe...very industrial. We were told the port would have a shuttle to take you to the gate. Therefore we made arrangements for a private taxi many weeks prior to come and pick us up at the gate. We found out the day before we docked that HAL was providing shuttle buses to take people to town for free! We almost were not allowed to get off and meet our taxi as we had planned. Poor communication on HAL's part. Even our travel agent couldn't get the info for us. All in all we were quite happy with our trip. We wished we could have spent an extra day in Oslo, there is so much to see there and we ran out of time. One last comment, disembarkation was as organized as any trip we have taken. We got right off at our assigned time and got our luggage, however there's were the issue was. We then got in line for a taxi to take us to the airports thank goodness our flight back to the states wasn't until 230pm. We got off the ship at 915am and waited in line for a taxi for an hour. There needs to be more taxis available for disembarkation day. We would have panicked if our flight had been earlier. We had looked into getting a car to pick us up and we were quoted about $130 USD. The taxi ended up being $60 USD,so we are glad we waited. We felt that everyone we dealt with on the ship was friendly and professional and were were pleased with it. The ship may be a bit older, but we felt ad though she was clean and well kept. We have been on Princess,Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line and now HAL. We felt as though the ship wax as nice as any of our other trips.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom
Cabin VF 7094
Lots of storage both drawers and hanging space. Loved the bathtub in bathroom. Very attentive cabin stewards. We were travelling with friends and asked for the steward to remove balcony partition which he did so we had a very spacious area to share while relaxing and cruising. Loved the commentary while leaving each port. Sat with a glass of wine with door open to balcony and TV volume up so we could hear it out on balcony.

  • Copenhagen
We flew into Copenhagen 4 days before our cruise and did our sightseeing on our own. We saw Amalianborg Palace and changing of the guards. We saw Rosenborg Palace and grounds. We took Canal boat ride. Went to Tivoli in the evening,it was quite beautiful the grounds and the flowers and the fountains. We did quite a lot if walking and felt we got a lot out of our visit. We took the train to Rothskilde to see the cathedral and Viking museum. We went to the Danish Jewish museum and Danish National Museum. We had no trouble getting around and found the Copenhagen card for train travel and museum entrance very helpful.

The scenery was beautiful. Fjords are gorgeous. The boat we were on was a ferry and it was old and shabby. It was also quite crowded. Some of the folks were rude and pushy when it came to getting in a place to take photos.

We found this gentleman online and arranged for him to meet us for the day. We did a walking tour of the city for a couple of hours. He then drove us to Vigland Sculpture Park. He then drove us to National Museum to see Viking exhibit. He then drove us to Bygdoy to Viking Ship Museum and then to the Fram Museum. We then took a ferry back to get on the ship. We felt like we got to see and experience quite a bit more than if we tried to see Oslo on our own.

The boat this operator had was beautiful. It was newer and sleek and the needless to say the scenery was amazing. You got much closer to the shore and waterfalls and it seemed more personal. The folks on this cruise were all very polite and mindful of allowing everyone space to take photos.
