I selected the Royal Caribbean Explorer of the seas for a Mediterranean cruise leaving Southampton Sunday 26th July and booked a junior suite for my son and I. I have a triple negative cancer which is a terminal condition and have been advised not to fly medium or long haul , a consequence of the cancer treatment is the need for very high levels of hygiene due to my reduced resistance to infections etc. Hence my selection of a cruise , which was advertised as having a high class level of service and accommodation . This should never be a worry on a quality holiday and I rarely find the need to mention it .
The cruise was a great disappointment in terms of the standard of accommodation and general standard of restaurants etc , I have listed below a number of detailed points but overall I feel it fell well short of the standard set out in advertising.
1. Filthy beds - note my sons bed had a sheet folded up to cover up hole (a hole / REALLY!)). Mattress was soiled and well past the day it should of been used. The bed consisted of a metal corrugated platform, with a thin mattress on top. When i asked if anything could be placed on top of the bed to add to the comfort level, I was offered a think latex topper , which was yellow as it was so old. My cabin attendant kept on apologising for the discomfort of the room and said that the ship was simply not good enough. I could not sleep for the 3 nights we were on the boat.
All I will say is does anybody expect to sleep and a Mattress with corrugated iron as a base ???
