Our family of five, consisting of two adults and three teenagers, have gone on many cruises locally in Singapore, but only two worldwide, one of which is with RCCL’s Oasis of the Seas (which I penned a review on four years back). When I heard that Quantum was coming to Singapore and thereafter homeported at Shanghai, I was pleasantly surprised at the decision, although with heavy skepticism of how it would fare in the undeveloped Chinese cruise industry. We booked the cruise an entire twelve months before its sailing date, with our extended family consisting of a further five adults.

As the departure date neared and reviews came piling in, I became increasingly worried at the quality of our cruise. At the time of departure, the satisfaction rating was slightly below 49%. I was afraid our trip would be marred by the many flaws and failures of the ship, and these fears persisted through to boarding. After a whole ten days, and a further week of reflection, I could confidently say that whilst several of my fears were in fact realised, the overall cruise was actually quite enjoyable, fun, and well worth the money for us.

Cabin Review

Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D1

The cabins on the ship were great. We had a balcony stateroom, conveniently located near a lift lobby (there are only two, compared to Oasis’s three). It was nothing too special (although I did take interest in the large veranda, which I suspect is not available on other RCI ships), but the experience in it was flawless. We hardly encountered any issues while we were inside. It was surprisingly spacious enough to fit the four of us in our nuclear family (the fifth slept with my extended family). Lighting was good, the beds were comfortable, and the air-conditioning worked well.

The toilet is a standard size for that of a cruise ship but it worked very well for us. The showerhead was detachable, which really pleased me. The temperature controls for the shower were very sensitive. It did not take long for the water to heat up or cool down to the right temperature, saving us a lot of unnecessary stress. Both the cabins and toilets were regularly cleaned by our room attendant, of which I shall elaborate further upon in Service.

Port Reviews

Singapore

Rather than harp on about my home city, which I would naturally be biased towards, I would comment on the suitability of my home city to those cruising. With the new terminal built at Marina Bay, it is very easy to get into the City - no more than ten minutes, actually. For those who wish not to take private transport into the city, simply hop on the MRT (Metro) station right next to the MRT station. It should connect you to major areas in the city within two to three stops.
