We just returned from the best vacation of our lives on board Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas! We took the 6-night Western Caribbean route from Fort Lauderdale visiting Belize City, Costa Maya, and Cozumel. There were six of us in our group and this was our 7th, 7th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1st cruises, respectively. Most of our previous cruises were also with Royal Caribbean, but this was our first time aboard a Freedom Class ship. Everyone had a wonderful time, from the most experienced cruisers to the first-timer.

I should have known by now to take the negative reviews I read before leaving with a grain of salt, but it was hard not to be a little worried about what I'd experience. I guess it's human nature to gloss over the many positive reviews and dwell mainly on the negative. But like many other relieved reviewers have said before me, I immediately discovered firsthand that my worries were completely unfounded and I am happy to report that my vacation experience was truly magnificent. I think that a positive person can find something to enjoy in every situation and a negative person can find something to complain about in every situation. As John Milton said so poetically in 1667: "the mind is its own place and, in itself can make a Heaven of Hell, a Hell of Heaven." I'm not perfect at that myself, but I hope you find this honest assessment of my experience with the Independence of the Seas helpful as you prepare to create your own heavenly experiences onboard!

EMBARKATION: We were met at the airport's baggage claim by friendly and courteous Royal Caribbean representatives who led us to the transfer bus. From Fort Lauderdale airport it was less than a 10-minute ride to the pier. Someone said there were 10 cruise ships in port that day! Our first glimpse of the Independence was breathtaking, especially seeing its enormity right next to several other smaller ships. We knew right away that we were in for a special experience!

Cabin Review

Superior Oceanview Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D2

Large room, large balcony. Not too far from elevators. VERY nice to be only one level up from Promenade & Dining Room. Low enough on ship to have little side to side sway. Some engine vibrations felt, but rare.
