  • Destination: the Mediterranean
  • Cabin Type: Balcony Stateroom

My wife and I are regular cruiser and booked this cruise to experience a new style very large ship.

On arrival at Genoa check-in was chaotic but nevertheless we got from arrival to ship in less than 30 minutes. Information was limited and hard to find.

We had booked cabin 10118 which was available from 2pm. The cabin was large and very clean. It had a superking sized bed, a three seater settee, fridge/minibar, safe, TV and masses of cupboard space. The shower room was large although the actual shower cubicle was on the small side. It had usable soap, shampoo, and shower gel. Towels were changed twice a day and sheet every couple of days.

There is no kettle in the cabin and if you take your own and it is seen on the luggage security x-ray it will be confiscated along with any alcohol.

THE RESTAURANT on deck 5 was excellent. The menu was varied, the food well cooked and presented. The service was good and NOT rushed.

THE BUFFET was massive with loads of 'food stations'. At busy time it was manic but if used when less busy the food was hot and well cooked.

We had the ALLEGRISSIMO DRINKS PACKAGE included which is great value and covered all drinks and bottled water as well as ice cream. Drinks in the cabin from minibar and supplied bottled water are chargeable so it pays to take bottled water from the bar to the cabin. There is a water and a ice fountain in the buffet but water in the main restaurant is chargeable without a drinks package.

The four pools were very warm but when at sea, like the deck space, were very crowded. My wife enjoyed an early swim as the pools open at 7am.

ENTERTAINMENT. The ship has a theatre that was very impressive. The shows were good but some catered for the Italian guests. Entertainment in the bars was piano players and singers. On deck there something going on all day but I found it too noisy and avoided it.

SMOKING is still permitted on parts of the open deck including bars and in some inside bars and the casino, as a non smoker it was hard to find a spot without smoke. Some ignored the rules and smoked anywhere including the balconies. No crew members stopped them.

CHECK OUT. We had to vacate our cabin at 7.30am. Our flight was at 1.30pm but despite this our transfer coach left the ship at 9am.which meant that we were waiting at the airport for four hours for our flight.

THE NEGATIVES. The ship caters for people from all over the world, with a large Italian contingent. All announcements are in five different languages and difficult to follow, by the end of the voyage you tend to ignore them as too much concentration is needed to listen.

Some of the Italian guests do not think that the 'rules' apply to them. This includes smoking, towels on chairs and good manners. Many nights were were woken up by Italian guest in the cabins areas talking loudly and allowing there child to run riot. It could have spoilt the holiday if you allowed it to.

WOULD I GO AGAIN...yes if the price is right.
