Four sisters and two husbands in their late 50's and 60's took a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest with pre and post hotel packages. We made arrangements through a travel agent using an "All Viking" package. It was a wonderful experience with no hassles related to the cruise, flights, transfers, hotels, and other arrangements. We saw many people looking like zombies that must have booked their own arrangements, walking through the airport wondering where to go, looking for transportation, rolling bags down the city streets searching for their hotel, etc. We were escorted to baggage, customs, and transfers by a Viking agent. It couldn't have been easier and stress free.
All of us applaud Viking for adopting a business model that will bring us back to them.
We are very experienced ocean cruisers, starting from the late 70's. It stopped a few years ago because service, food, size of ships, and the hassles of tendering in ports tired us of the experience. Our Viking boat was about 95% full which meant 180 passengers. We tied up very close to each city center so walking or bus tours were convenient. If you remember the "old days" of cruising, Viking will bring you back. Service excelled, food was very good, you met your staff and could talk with them instead of having them rush off for whatever reason. We never felt nickeled-and-dimed, crowded, rushed, or herded. Yes, you have to fly to Europe but it was worth it.
