We have previously done cruises on Regent, Seabourne, and Uniworld so while not a cruise snob, I have been fortunate to experience some of the top cruise lines. I chose Prinsendam because the itinerary was interesting; the boat was small; and the dates fit exactly within my travel window opportunity. The fact that the cost of the cruise was 50% less than other small ships didn't hurt, either. On the other hand, the reviews prior to my cruise were rather mixed so we were rather apprehensive.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised with Prinsendam. The service and friendliness of the staff was top notch- 10 out of 10 and the biggest plus of the experience. I really liked the restaurant staff and the housekeeping staff-their job is really difficult, yet every single encounter was a pleasant experience. I hope Holland pays these people adequately because they are really what makes the cruise seem more luxurious than perhaps it actually is.

I am not a foodie, but I just don't agree with those who complain about the food. I am not saying that you will have the best meal of your life or that every single item is wonderful, but there is an abundance of choice and every opportunity to have a bunch of pretty good meals. I thought the desserts were especially good while the coffee was a weak point. The public rooms are all in excellent shape and while the state rooms are definitely not as nice as Seabourne and Regent, they are perfectly adequate. It would have been nice to have access to ESPN, but you do have CNBC, Fox, BBC, and access to a large library of DVDs (free). Shower pressure was good. Hair dryers, but in the room itself, not the bathroom, which is a negative. Free laundry facilities, a major plus on a cruise ship. The gym is adequate, not great. 4X laps on Deck 7 equal a mile so plenty of opportunities to get some outdoor exercise.

Cabin Review

Large Ocean-View Stateroom

Cabin G

Mid ship, Dolphin deck, small window. Good shower pressure.

If staying on Dolphin deck, pick the middle of the ship. The front rooms have portholes, not windows and in the back of the boat, you can hear the engines.
