As first time cruisers, in our mid fifties, we didn't know what to expect or how we would be passing the time on our cruise "Retreat to Isle of Pines". We chose this cruise based on our own availability and embarkation port, so we could visit family. Although embarking at White Bay Terminal is not as convenient as the International terminal at Circular Quay, it is only a short taxi ride from the CBD. Although it was a school holiday cruise we were not disturbed by children or noise at all. We did book a mini-suite with a balcony and enjoyed this very much. Being able to sit in the fresh air for "quiet time" was perfect for us. The mini-suites are on the 11th level, thereby close to Plantation buffet for our first coffee/tea of the day (although quality could be improved) brought back to our room. These suites are very comfortable with plenty of space, a three seater sofa bed, armchair and coffee table, as well as a long desk top counter to hold all the bits and pieces. The décor is a little dated by everything worked and was kept spotlessly clean. Our cabin stewards were friendly and efficient, always smiling and greeting us in the passageway. Daytime activities were varied, such as : (free) dance classes, deck games, board game and puzzle lounge, quizzes and outside movies and (at cost) exercise groups, bingo, cocktail mixing, beer/whiskey tasting. Two pools available, one for adults only as well as the outdoor Jacuzzis at the adults only Oasis (which were popular with the young adults aboard). In the evening, plenty of live music of various styles, different theme nights, and a professionally presented theatre show. Included in-fare dining options were the adequate buffet Plantation, which is due for refurbishment soon, and the Waterfront restaurant which generally requires reservations. Service in both is excellent. Pay extra for Luna (Thai and Japanese) and Salt Grill by Luke Mangan. These are both worth the extra expense. The food is lovely and table service extremely attentive. The Salt Grill also offers High Tea for $20pp which is excellent - you won't be hungry for dinner.

On board drinks are reasonable pub prices, with cocktails at $10 - $15. Because the ship operates on a cashless charge card system, be careful with spending here. Cans of soft drinks are about $2-75. A café quality coffee can be bought at the top deck café or inside lounge for $3-50. I had wondered about the warning to bring own lanyard- this is because they cost $8 to buy and are preferable for keeping your swipe card accessible. We did not need any of the kid's clubs but they seemed well organised with their own "security" crew on deck when required.

Shore Tours in Port Vila were plentiful. We did Tranquillity Island and the turtle sanctuary which was expensive but a very pleasant day out. Mare and Isle of Pines offered a limited selection of activities but the beaches are lovely and suitable for family snorkelling.
