My wife and I have been fortunate enough to travel the world, but cruising was never a real option we enjoyed. WE booked our Viking trip with a group of friends who were also fist time river cruisers in order to have company and to see whether we would enjoy the experience.
From the moment we walked down the Quay in Paris and watched the staff run to take our luggage, the service was superlative and the staff exceptionally friendly.
Even though this was our initial trip with Viking we were welcomed as if we had been on many cruises. Two members of the senior staff went far beyond what is usual in making us feel like friends rather than customers: Feliz Temur (Program Director) was an incredible resource and over the days we were together she seemed more like a friend than anything else. The Maitre D' Illyan Begovski was a true artist of customer service and an exceptional bonus to our dining experience.
We booked an A cabin - the facilities were very nice - but we found we spent very little time there except for sleeping. The one less than enjoyable experience was waking up to find another ship docked next to us and blocking the view. That sort of frequent occurrence certainly negates the premium paid for a veranda or large windows.
Boarding in Paris was a bit difficult as many of our party had difficulties finding the Quay (lack of knowledge on the part of taxi drivers) Piers could be better marked.
