Recently went on a cruise to the western Med with MSC Cruise lines and wanted to share our experience. There are a lot of valuable tips and information from other forum members so for anyone planning a cruise, I agree it pays to do your research!

We are new to cruising having taken our first cruise only last year. Due to the specific dates and itinerary (Northern Europe) we were looking for, we ended up taking our first cruise with MSC.... subsequently we came across Cruise Critic and started reading the bad reviews of the company and the ship so we were a little anxious and prepared for the worse. Long story short, we ended up with a really fantastic trip to Norway and good impression of MSC such that we were open to cruising with them again.

Balcony Stateroom

Cabin B3

We met out friendly room steward as we go to our cabin and I must say he did a great job of keeping our cabin clean (imagine hand prints on the mirrors and sun cream smudges on the balcony doors!) and stocked with fresh towels twice a day. Our stateroom, room 13021, was a forward portside balcony on the same level as the ship's bridge. We chose this cabin as it was underneath the spa so there would be light foot traffic and certainly no noise in the evenings and it proved to be exactly so (except one of the nights when the cabin below on deck 12 had something that sounded like a wrestling match.

As we were travelling for 2 weeks with 4 people, we had a lot of lugguage (3 large check-in, 4 cabin sized roll-ons and 3 back-packs) yet there was ample space to store our bags between the cupboards and under the bed.

The cabin also came with an electronic safe large enough to keep small laptops and all our other valuables.

I would say that for a family of 4, with the full-sized sofabed set up, space became tight but not impossible. I did knock my leg against the corner of the sofabed a few times trying to get to the balcony door but the stateroom was otherwise what we anticipated. The balcony itself was a typical size (around 50 square feet) to fit just 2 chairs and a small coffee table.

There were only 2 powerpoint plugs in the cabin so we brought our own power strip to ensure we could charge all the tablets, cameras and other electronic items we had.

The bathroom was clean with sufficient space to keep toiletries and other personal effects either on the shelf or in the cupboards. One thing that was very positive was getting the hot water in the shower: it was quick to warm up with sufficient pressure.

Port Reviews

Barcelona

This is a beautiful city to explore and a short shore excursion does not do it justice.

The Basilica Sagrada Familia is quite inspiring though it will remain under construction for many more years to come. If you plan to visit, make sure you purchase your tickets in advance and they limit the number of people who can enter each hour.

Marseille

Much of the action revolves around the Vieux Port. There are two main sight-seeing tours around the city with either the hop-on hop-off or le petit train. We took le petit train which only stops at the Notre Dame de la Garde. A good way to see the city none the less.

Our French friends recommended that we also visit Les Calanque but the boats visiting there are every couple of hours and not recommended if you have young kids in case they get board after 10 mins.

Malta (Valletta)

A very historic city. If you can, watch as the ship enters the Grand Harbour. I woke up early to watch and it was absolutely beautiful with a low sun giving the historic buildings a beautiful colour.

We tried out a horse drawn carriage for a tour of the city. Whilst not being a professional tour guide, the carriage driver did a half decent job of pointing out the main buildings and attractions of the city before dropping us in the centre at the end of the tour.

Palma de Mallorca (Majorca)

Did not go down to visit the city as we arrived at night.
