This was our 4th RCI Cruise and have always been impressed before. Unfortunately not so much this time. Embarkation was fine and Cabin was excellent although bin needed emptying, still having contents from previous occupant and bed was still awaiting pillow cases, when we got in. The main problem we had was trying to find a seat in the evening. Having attended Dining Room or Theatre we then spent time wandering around ship in the vain hope of finding somewhere to sit and have a drink. On a few occasions we gave up and just went back to the cabin. When we did find a seat having managed to outrun other guests to an empty chair, bar service seemed slow, usually as soon as you sit down a waiter appears asking if you want a drink. On this ship you either had to wait a while or go and queue up at the bar, which very often only had one person serving and although doing their best, getting served took quite a while at times. Don't know if this is due to all the drinks packages or as a result of the re-fit, but there are too many guests for the available seating in the bars. At the beginning of the cruise there were problems with people reserving sun beds with towels and then leaving them there for ages (against RCI policy). We were on two sun beds for about 3 hours one day and the three next to us had towels and a couple of random books left on them, we didn't see the occupants until they returned just as we were leaving, meanwhile we saw quite a few guests searching around for empty sun beds. Credit to RCI they did address this later in the cruise and began to remove things when the sunbeds were left empty for a while. Food in the Main Dining Room was very good although to begin with we had a problem getting the time we wanted on Mytime dining which defeats the object, later in the cruise this seemed to have been rectified and we had no further issues with this. Service by staff in Main Dining Room was excellent. Windjammer was very busy at breakfast time and you had to search for some time to get a seat. If we were on an early excursion we used room service for breakfast which was much easier and very good. At lunch and dinner time not so busy, food was good but not a great deal of variation. We ate at Giovanni's on one occasion, food very good but no better than Main Dining Room didn't think it was worth cover charge, also we felt a bit rushed presumably as table needed for more guests later. Spa visit was excellent and gym facilities also. We thought the entertainment was good, enjoyed Queen tribute, West End Style shows, Comedy Juggler and most of the other shows, real highlight was the Ice Show, don't miss it. Port and Shore excursions we did were very good, can recommend wine tasting in Majorca, we had great fun on that one and had a very happy coach on way back to ship. We disembarked our own luggage which went smoothly. In conclusion this cruise has put us off travelling RCI in future and if we did it wouldn't be on Explorer.

Not up to standard of previous RCI cruises

This was our 4th RCI Cruise and have always been impressed before. Unfortunately not so much this time.

Embarkation was fine and Cabin was excellent although bin needed emptying, still having contents from previous occupant and bed was still awaiting pillow cases, when we got in.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Ajaccio Scenic Tour
We really liked Corsica, began with a drive out of city and along coast. Followed this with a visit to memorial to Napoleon. Then a walking tour of Ajaccio visiting sites of interest. we then had free time to look around and shop.

  • Gibraltar
Very good for duty free shopping. Not a lot to do other than that, we did not take a trip up the rock which maybe we should have done to get more from the visit

  • Malaga City Tour
A general tour around streets which was enjoyable, culminated in a visit to the cathedral and some free time for shopping.

  • Nice and St Paul de Vince
Started with a drive around Nice which was ok. Then went to St Paul De Vince where we had a walking tour followed by free time. This was very good, lovely place with some nice shops. Would probably have preferred to go straight there and had more time rather than the drive around Nice.

  • Wine Tasting
Started with a drive to Northern Coast of Majorca via Valldemosa although we didn't stop there and the tour description said we did, not sure if this was down to the tour company or Royal Caribbean. We visited a large house in a picturesque location, former home of Spanish nobility.
Highlight was the visit to the Vineyard where we were able to sample several Majorcan wines and our hosts were very friendly and generous with the samples.
This made for a very happy bus load of tourists on the way back to the ship. I would recommend this tour.

  • Best of Sardinia
First went to ancient city of Nora, very interesting and informative guide. After this went to a Sardinian farm and had a Sardinian lunch with wine, quite a spread of local cheeses, sausages, bread and cakes, thoroughly enjoyable.
After this a city tour of Cagliari which was interesting but not the most picturesque of towns and cities we have visited in Italy.

  • Jerez de la Frontera
Enjoyed the visit to Jerez and the included tour of Gonzales Byass Sherry. After this tour and return to ship, we wandered around the Cadiz shops on our own, as the berth is within easy walking distance.
