This is the first time we have cruised with Celebrity and not sure if we would sail with them again. The embarkation process was fabulous, no delay, straight on board. Cabin availability was announced about an hour after we boarded. We arrived at Civitavecchia by train, like many others, and was disappointed there was no shuttle bus from the station supplied by the ship which was about a 5 - 10 mins drive but a 25- 30 min walk with cases. There was a bus from the station to the port shuttle (cost involved). We enjoyed every port of call, but found the shore excursions were far more expensive than they needed to be. We did book 3 excursions with Celebrity (Santorini, Istanbul and Athens) as we had been given on board credit, which covered some of the cost. We were generally satisfied with these, however we found the guide on the Santorini tour a little abrupt and full of his own self importance. We booked with a private tour operator for Naples (we had been handed a leaflet whilst in port at Mykonos) and did virtually the same tour as Celebrity was offering for US$365 and paid 65 euro (+ about 12 euro for entry to Pompeii) with this company. They had 3 coaches of people from this port mostly from our ship). The tour was fantastic and visited Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, Positano and Pompeii. The guide was lighthearted, and knowledgeable. The production shows were very good however as for the music around the rest of the ship it was very loud and repetitive. We would have liked an area with quiet live music where you could sit and have a drink and chat with fellow guests without having to shout for example a piano bar. The ship did offer Ballroom Dancing Lessons as an activity, which were very well done, apart from the fact that there was no room to move in the Grand Foyer where it was held. This is the main dance area and the floor space is very small. A big disappointment for such a large ship. There was a dance floor in the Sky Bar for late night discos but once again not geared for ballroom dancers. We had cause to put a feedback form in regarding one of the ships hosts. He was the DJ and only knew how to play music on a lap top but had no idea how to interact with his audience. The response we got on a telephone message on our cabin phone was that he was quite new and was still learning. We understand people have to learn but should have at least some personality to start with which was missing. Why is he allowed to host solo whilst he is still learning? We had set dining room Opus at 6.30 (first sitting). Quality of food was average, some dishes were very good, others were undercooked to our liking especially the meat coming up rare even though we asked for medium, on more than one occasion. The wait staff were very efficient and friendly. The food in the Ocean View Buffet was also of average quality however on a positive note there were two stations for each type of food, which alleviated crowding. The cabin (balcony level 8) was a nice size, very clean but lacking in storage space as the wardrobe would have benefitted from some shelving for shorts, etc. The cabin staff were very pleasant however we were quite surprised when we were asked by the cabin steward why we had removed the automatic tipping. What happened to privacy. When we queried this with guest relations they stated they were entitled to know as it affected their income. Surely they could be told how many people were/were not, rather than particular names. We always remove automatic tipping and tip the people we receive good service from, which is what we did on this cruise.
