We know enough people that love cruising that we finally had to try it. Now we have, we don't need to try it again. Too bad we picked a Carnival ship for on only cruise - it seemed to have priorities different from ours.

First - the embarkation. From the moment we stepped off the bus until two hours later, we stood in long, noisy lines. This is probably where I picked up the flu bug that exiled me to the cabin 3 days later. We had been advised to carry on our own suitcases - which was a plus - we were unpacked and ready to explore once we finally made it to our balcony (free upgrade!) cabin. There was pretzel salt and crumbs on the desk! And a sticky spot from a glass on one of the bedside tables. I guess the cleaning from the last passengers was not complete?

And before I am shuttled off as a humbug - our cabin and dining crew were very friendly and wanted to make us happy. No complaints about the crew we were close to. Interesting tidbit though - every one of them we had a conversation with told us of their plans to get away from working for Carnival.

Cabin Review

Balcony

Nice enough. Free upgrade to balcony! But it had not been cleaned thoroughly. One of the two mattresses was well past its end of life (I have a picture of the hole in the middle), but I could not convince my wife to request a replacement by the time I figured out why her back ached. The walls transmitted sounds from next door with very little attenuation. I am so glad we had a cabin next to the quiet bridge so we only got noise from one side. I am a big fan of sex, and I appreciate people with different sexual proclivities, but hearing homosexual sex whenever we were in our cabin was a bit of a turn-off.

Port Reviews

Cozumel

We took a taxi to Mr. Sancho's Beach Club and had a very pleasant day. Go for the all-inclusive, which covers beach, food, drink, and service. Service was fantastic. Food and drinks were so-so, but the surroundings made them seem special.

Grand Cayman (Georgetown)

We got off the boat (after waiting an hour and a half for a tender) and took a bus to Governor's Beach. Bus was only $5 for two of us. There was only one other person on the beach when we arrived, and it never got crowded. The reef just offshore was not great, but the fish were. Big blue-gray fish escorted my everywhere - look out for their poop! Indigos and rainbows and everything else. However, I was almost killed by a jet ski. It passed within a few feet. When tired of the snorkeling, we walked down the beach toward the ship. The beach was nice, wide, not crowded, clean. We finally found a public walkway to get back to the road where we had lunch at Coconut Joe's. They had the local lager beer on tap! The only good beer we had on the whole cruise. Food was good enough, but prices were steep. It may have been the unfavorable exchange rate. My wife was so worried about the lines getting back on the boat that we ended early. That turned out to be a good idea, as the line for the tenders became endless between the time we got to the dock and got onto a tender.
