Having traveled on 3 Carnival Funships prior, we (wife and 2 teen girls) decided to try a different cruise line to compare. This was our first RCI cruise. We set sail on 12/19 on a 3 nite cruise. Lets start at the start.. Flew in the nite before and stayed at the Embassy Suites at the MIA airport. This was our third time employing this strategy and it worked great! Arrived at hotel with enough time to enjoy 90 minutes of their free happy hour. If you like a couple drinks you will love the hotel. Left for the ship around 10:30 am debarkation day...$24 cab ride with no hassles. Embarkation was WAY easier and smoother than Carnival! We had 2 outside cabins one cabin apart with port hole views (we booked last minute deal and took the assignment at check in). Our request for a fridge was ignored and not noted on our reservation...also, the request for one room to be set up as twin beds was ignored...both requests were fulfilled by our cabin steward within 5 hours of check in. The whole check in to on the ship process took less than 30 minutes! A much better than our experience with Carnival back in March. Although we were told we could not access our cabins until 1 pm, we made our way around and were able to check our bags into our cabins soon after boarding. We were immediately struck by how small and cramped the rooms were. No small sofa (ala Carnival). Headed up to Windjammer for lunch and hung out by the pool for a nice sunning session. Windjammer cafe was smaller than Carnival but was exponentially cleaner. Food was OK and the deck area around the pool was much cleaner than Carnival...mostly due to RCI not setting up tables around the pool area for folks to eat. We did try the deli...it was good...better than Carnival's. The food stations in Windjammer were better set up and thought out than Carnival's common casual dining areas. Dress codes were enforced (no wet suits or bare feet allowed). Took the Main seating for dining and found the other reviews posted very much consistent with our experience...nothing to write home about and not near as good as Carnival. We were struck at how unfriendly (still professional) that the RCI staff was compared to Carnival. Clearly not a FunShip! Typical cruise entertainment. The juggler was awful...comedian surprisingly good and the dance/song nowhere near as good as Carnival. First stop was RCI's Coco Cay. Very nice stop...clean and cookout was a pleasant surprise. We did not take any of the RCI excursions. Second stop was in Nassau. Since we had been here before we did not do any of the RCI excursions. Spent time shopping around the open market and select stores in the area. Spent most of the day around the pool until we pushed off at 4:30. Debarkation went smoothly and we were off the ship by 10 am. We booked a hotel in South Beach for the day and enjoyed a great day on the beach. Overall, there were thumbs up and down on this cruise compared to Carnival. One family did warn that because this ship is the smallest and oldest of the RCI line it is not representative of the RCI line. Regardless, the family was unanimous in our opinion that we prefer Carnival over RCI.
