We took the TA on 4/8/15 after having been on 2 other HAL ships that definitely had staff issues and maintenance problems. We figured we'd give HAL one more chance and we are glad we did! The Nieuw Amsterdam was great! I have no complaints, but I do have some compliments. We ate in the MDR every night on the Open Seating plan. We never had to wait for a table once in the 2 weeks. The service was great except for 1 night and I think it possible that that waiter was new to his job. We all (6) helped him along and nobody was really upset at his mistakes. The time it took between courses to get the next course was acceptable. And when we got the food, it was delicious!! If it was supposed to be hot, it was! Whenever either my husband or I had beef it was cooked to perfection--just the way we asked it to be done. The same with the tuna.
The staff overall was very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Our stewards were super.
The entertainment was very good or not so good depending on your likes. We loved the Alley Cats and Pianotainment. The staff show was really good. The "Broadway" type night was good too, but on occasion the music was too loud and it drown out the singers. The musician was so so and the Supreme Dream Girls we walked out of because the music was so loud that they were screaming into their mics. The drummer was on an ego trip I think!
Plenty of storage area for the two of us! Bigger than some we have been in. Nice sized balcony. Comfy beds and pillows. I would like to see an electric outlet in the bathroom, not just that shaver outlet. Using an electric toothbrush isn't exactly convenient. Really like the individual reading lights!
We zipped through getting on because we got there early and we had a transport chair that my husband needs because although he can walk around the ship, he cannot walk for long distances such as from the shuttle to the stateroom with everything in between.
We toured by ourselves because we just wanted to go out and do some exploring. It was a long walk into town pushing the transport chair with my husband in it, but I needed the exercise!
We didn't get off the ship so I don't know how I can possible write anything about it. The scenery from our stateroom was very nice indeed. I wasn't aware that it was so mountainous.
We took the shuttle into town and explored ourselves. I thought the shuttle was overpriced. If it had been $ 7.00 round trip instead of $ 7.00 one-way I would have thought it much more reasonable.
We disembarked here. It was efficient and easy to get a taxi to our hotel. The staff were very friendly and well wishing as we exited the vessel. Our experience was a good one.
