  • Cabin Type: Mid-Ship Inside

Living in Torrevieja in Alicante Spain, we deserved a much needed holiday not having one for the last five years. We booked a last minute cruise package through Logitravel on the Norwegian Spirit.

We decided on driving our own car to Alicante train Station and letting www.parking10.com look after my car for 10 days in underground secure parking. So at 8,30 am 26th of March we met them at Alicante train station at the terminal.

Trains in Spain run on time, our train was ready to leave Alicante to Barcelona at 09,20 am. Train tickets 23 euro each. Arriving in Barcelona at 14,00 hrs. we jumped in first taxi to the Port of Barcelona, 4 people and 4 large cases was 20 euro to the port.

Check in with NCL not the best ever, queued for a while, people in front had no idea. Once we were at desk it went quick as we booked in online first. At this point they register a credit card one card per room! (I will get back to this later) Checked in room card in hand we made the long walk onboard! Washy Washy Happy Happy is the cruises hygiene motto.

As we booked last minute we booked the cheapest longest cruise possible I will tell you the amazing price we got at the end. We booked two inside cabins on deck 10.

when we got to the cabins I wasn't disappointed, they were compact but had everything a balcony room had except the sea view and balcony. Well the rooms are only for sleeping in.

So now the confusion starts drinks package or not? So with a bit of haggling I got a bottled wine package 8 bottles of my choice for $254 and a ultimate drinks package for the wife $626! The kids 17 and 18 were happy with soft drinks packages $84 dollars each package. Total $1046 dollars all drinks paid in advance.

My wine was 40 dollars a bottle purchased individually so automatic saving of $66.

The kids only had to drink over two pepsi's a day to cover their outlay. That's easy to do! Now the ultimate drinks package is $626 the catch is each person must purchase one so the question is “is it worth it” well yes the wife managed to drink $1108 so saving 482 dollars. Average drink price for one wine was 11,50 dollars. To break even on drinks packages you need to drink 6 wines or beers or whiskeys a day every day for the full 10 days even on shore days! Drink more than 6 alcoholic drinks per day per person and your in profit.

A very sore point for me was that the Euro and the Dollar were $1 = 1€ !

The Norwegian Spirit is not a big ship but is adequate, we explored from top to bottom on first day at sea. We found the places where we wanted to be and stuck to going to those places.

Next big decisions to make where what trips to go on? Our Itinerary was Barcelona, Sea Day, Casablanca, Sea Day, Madeira , Sea Day,Tenerife, Lanzarote, then Malaga, Sea day then Barcelona.

So Casablanca alone or on coach trip, coach trip seemed the safest option. Madeira coach trip, Tenerife whale watching on a catamaran boat , Lanzarote coach trip, and Malaga do our own thing! So another $440 dollars each spent.

Our favourite evening Restaurant was Windows (included in price) we tried The Garden but didn't like it, we tried Cagney's Steakhouse but this has a $35 dollar a head surcharge. Yes it was worth it it was lush!

Breakfast was divided between no stress Windows Restaurant and very Stressful Raffles Court Buffet style restaurant! If you go to Raffles get you table first, put your juice and tea on it then go to get your food, do it the other way around and you will be walking for miles carrying plates of food.

Trust me I had a full English breakfast every day.

So we liked Henrys Pub for cocktails before dinner. We liked shopping in the Atrium. We liked Galaxy of the Stars for bingo, dancing, quizzes etc. plus it was a very front of ship so great to chill and relax! We liked the casino and we enjoyed the Maharanis disco late night on the NCL white night! Sea days our days were filled by moving around the ship following the entertainment guide in the magazine, when nothing took our fancy time to sunbathe next to the outdoor pool and take the odd jacuzzi or two. Pool was far to cold for us in March!

Positives around the ship, great staff, great food, ok entertainment, not to busy, clean.

Negatives around the ship, guests wandering around with no idea where they are or where they are going, guests stopping to chat in middle of food hall walkways, kids where running everywhere and no one told them off, noisy people in quiet areas.

The trips, actually good value for money, if you go in taxi yourself you will pay just a little less but by the time you have paid for attractions and tipped your driver you will have paid more.

Ok we paid just 500 euro each for the 10 day cruise but there is and extra 130 euro to pay in tips so 630 each for 10 days.

On top of that the trips, drinks packages and very little spends whist ashore!

A must is travelling back in style, so first class renfe train from Barcelona to Alicante 66 euros each. Includes the VIP suite in Barcelona for a few hours eating and drinking for free, free wifi and chargers. On the train back we got breakfast and lunch as well as free alcoholic drinks! Great way to end the holiday!

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Inside
Cabin IA 10101

I thought there would be noise from lift. There was no noise from lift. As we booked last minute we booked the cheapest longest cruise possible I will tell you the amazing price we got at the end. We booked two inside cabins on deck 10.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Cable Car

Scary for those scared of heights. Once again queues but went smoothly the views from the cable car are amazing! Look back and see your cruise ship in the distance. I recommend this attraction.

Island Tour

It probably worked out cheaper booking with cruise. Saw most of the Island great views. The people who turned up in Taxis had to queue longer than coach travellers.

Toboggan Rides

We thought there was going to be a really long wait because of the queue but they kept the line moving and it was a very exciting ride down the mountain!

Wine Tasting

A bit rushed like catlle in and out, would have like to try more than two wines, would of liked to sit and relax and take time but was all rushed through. It was good and the wine was nice

Mountain of Fire

Stuck in coach , no freedom, very interesting but boring at the same time, half the time I want the coach to crash for a bit of excitement. All I can say is been there done that never again.

Malaga

Malaga has greatly improved , everything is around the port area, we took shuttle bus to town centre then got on horse and cart and it took four of us around the main sights for 30 mins for 30 euros well worth it. the w strolled back through the port market to the ship a lovely relaxing morning.

Barcelona

Barcelona is a tourist hotspot, jump on a tour bus where you can hop on and off at all the famous sights. For me the best bit about Barcelona is getting to the VIP area in the Renfe train station before the long journey home.

Whale Watching

It does what it says on the can, you go on a cataraman you go to sea, you see the smallest whales ever, you get free drinks on board and you get to stop and have a swim in the med. It was a great day out, we all really enjoyed this one!
