Sail Date: Mar 2015

Traveled with children

Travel Date: March 22-29, 2015. This was our FIRST cruise with Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas. We have travelled three times with Carnival, three times with Norwegian and once with Princess. None of those ships can compare to the Allure of the Seas.

Embarkation: This was the EASIEST embarkation process I have ever experienced. From the minute we received our time to board via email, to the time we arrive at Port Everglades and swiftly were processed by Port security and RCI staff, it could not have been more smooth or simple. Signs were placed were to go and who to see to get on board fast. It was outstanding!

Superior Ocean View Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D8

The room was spacious. The bed was heavenly. I would have like more shelf space. There is a lot of empty space that could be used for storage. For example, above the sofa. Cabinets could be added or make the sofa like an ottoman and have some space inside for storage. Bathroom was a good size. It was nicely decorated with silver and light wood fixtures. The housekeeping staff was attentive and quick. The balcony was spacious. We had 2 chairs and a table. This room is located around the corner from the spa and fitness area. No noise heard, very quiet other than someone slamming the door nearby. The room was soundproof!

Port Reviews

Labadee

We decided NOT to book an excursion because we just walked off the ship and walked to the beach. The Labadee, Haiti pier is owned by RCI. There was a one way ferry available or you could walk to the beach. You could also take a tram, which was pulled by a tractor. It was slow as molasses. You can walk faster. There are 4 stops on the tram. If you look at the map, there are 4 public areas you can relax and enjoy. Since this port is RCI owned, they had a BBQ lunch prepared for the ship guests. Lunch was served from 11:30a to 1:30p. It was BBQ ribs, Chicken, fresh fruit, sweets, beverages and salad.

There was a village market which we didn't browse. We were asked to come over by some of the vendors to check out what they were selling. One person from our party went over but they didn't really bargain down too much so we just left our footprints on sand.

There are plenty of lounge chairs too. I'd bring some cash to tip the workers if you'd like.

I noticed at one of the BBQ locations, there was a huge double fence with barbwire on top to separate the property.

I noticed some people had visitor passes too. I'm glad RCI allows family to visit their employees and enjoy the food and fun.

Falmouth

We decided not to book an excursion through RCI because of the cost. We walked out of the pier area and looked for OFFICIAL Jamaica Tourism Board operators. The OFFICIAL Jamaican Tourism Board officials wear white shirts, safari style hats or pith helmets, dark blue/black pants and have the logo on their shirts. You can check with them regarding reputable drivers. They said to get a driver with the JTB (Jamaican tourism board) license. Once you have their license show it to the Officials and they can verify if the person is legit. Then, you can talk about prices. We spoke to Mr. Green and bargained for a sightseeing tour for 5 of us for a total of $100 US. We did 3 hours of sightseeing and went to Montego Bay and back.

I want to say his first name is Lynvil but I'm not sure. He was awesome! He was animated, gave us lots of information about the area and city. He pointed out places, people and even gave us a quiz! We made a few stops along the way. We were glad we spoke to him about a private tour!

Falmouth is beautiful. This port is owned by RCI. The port area is filled with tax/duty free shops. There are historical billboard style markers educating visitors about the area and Jamaica's rich history. Once you leave the gated area, the streets are narrow. Plenty of people wanting to sell their merchandise. No one is aggressive or in your face. They politely ask if you'd like something and if not it's ok.

Cozumel

We decided NOT to book an excursion. 3 members of our family decided to look for OFFICIAL Mexican Tourism Board Operators. We docked at the international pier. Once we left the ship, we found a kiosk and asked about city/sightseeing and Mayan Ruins tour. The man said to go to the taxi area. The taxi area is gated inside the pier just before exiting onto the streets of Cozumel. This IS THE OFFICIAL taxi to take. They have set rates. We were quoted $100 US for the 3 of us. We asked for an English speaking driver because 2 family members didn't speak Spanish. I did and translated most of the time. He spoke okay but I still had to translate.

The tour began with a drive out of Cozumel. This was congested with traffic. There were 5 ships docked when we were there. The driver was telling us about the area and pointing out sights. We went to San Gervasio's Mayan Ruins. It was about a 30 minute drive. Entrance fee is $5 US per adult. My child under 5 was FREE. CASH ONLY at the Entrance. The Ruins fee: $4 US, child was FREE. They take visa/mc at the ruins entrance site. We explored for quite a while. There were 17 buildings/ruins to see. The buildings/ruins were well marked. The walking path was marked but had stones, rocks and roots throughout so watch your step! Each ruin had a sign in English and Spanish describing what was before you. You can either take a self guided tour or hire a guide. The guide wanted to charge $18 US then went down to $15 US but we declined because of my little one.

Afterward, we got back in the taxi and drive around the perimeter. Breathtaking views of the Gulf waters. The driver told us how Hurricane Wilma ravaged the area and it took 10 years to rebuild. He mentioned and pointed out how MANY businesses didn't return to the seashore because of their losses. He took us to 2 spots that weren't there before the hurricane. Gorgeous coves and rock formations were carved and exposed by the hurricane. These spots were breathtaking!

We did a 3 hour tour. We returned just in time because there was a storm coming toward the ship area. We had a great time and felt safe.

The other 2 members of our family went to Playa Mia. They said is was good but not great. One of the water slides was broken. The food was regular food and nothing special to talk about. They didn't stay long. They were happy they didn't pay the high prices offered by RCI.

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

No excursions taken. We took a taxi to and from the Port. The taxi service getting to the port was not that great because they didn't have a van for 5. We had to take 2 taxi's to get to the port. The return trip was better because we got a van and all 5 fit nicely.
