Our first cruise on Grandeur of the Seas and also out of Port of Tampa. Arrived in Tampa day before so we could have a relaxing evening, but most of all so we could get free parking. Hampton Inn Ybor City has a special for cruisers that entitles you to a nice, hot breakfast buffet on cruise morning and free parking while on the cruise. They have a nice covered parking area and a free shuttle to and from the port. Jose is the shuttle driver/maintenance person and he is extremely helpful and pleasant. We were at the port at 10:30 and on the ship at 11:15. We are platinum so the priority boarding is a wonderful perk. First thing we did was check our seating in the DR. Always request table for two and have always gotten it until this time. We had a table for 6 and while I normally asked to be moved, I decided not to this time. Big mistake! Won't go into the tablemates thing, but we did do an evening in the Windjammer just to give ourselves a break. After checking the DR we went to WJ and had a nice leisurely lunch then looked over the ship and by that time our cabin was ready. We require a handicap accessible cabin as hubby does not walk and uses a scooter. We had inside cabin 2103 and it was very nice. We have only been disappointed once in RCL's accessible cabins and this was not the time. (Sovereign, in March, cabin was a converted accessible and was awful. Wasn't much larger than a regular cabin but did have a wider doorway so could get the scooter in but that was it.) We were so pleased with the cabin we were all set for a smooth cruise. Unfortunately, it didn't happen exactly like that. The ship was nice but just didn't have the sense of class the other RCL ships have had. As I stated, hubby is handicapped and, unfortunately, the Grandeur is lacking in accessibility. This first came to our attention at Muster when hubby nearly went head over tiller trying to get back inside. Strangely, going out on deck is ramped but coming back in is not. Bad move! After inquiring, we were told only decks 9 & 10 are accessible. After some discussion, we were rudely dismissed and informed that we are the only ones who have ever complained. DUH! There were 3 other scooter-dependent people ahead of us in line and 2 behind us and they were all asking about this. One man actually took a tumble trying to get inside from Deck 5. The customer service reps were not very pleasant and were all unanimous that it wasn't Royal Caribbean's problem. That was on the first day. Next day we were in Key West and docked at the Naval pier instead of the regular pier. Then it was announced that shuttles would be taking everyone into town and bringing them back. No one was allowed to walk around the pier to town because it was military (understood completely). When we went down we were met with "sorry there are no handicap accessible shuttles at this time". So, up to customer service we went where we were told once again, "sorry, not our problem" in exactly those words. They informed us that if there were no accessible shuttles then they couldn't help us. It was too funny as by the time we were finished talking there were 3 other scooters lined up behind us. We did find out later that an accessible van showed up at about 1:30 but sail time was 3:30 so it was hardly worth the effort. Fortunately we have been to Key West many times but it's just the principle of the whole thing. Next day was Cozumel and the day was lovely and we had a good time shopping...no hitches this day. Yahoo. Sea day was wonderful as usual and in all and as usual we had a nice cruise. Of course, any cruise is good. I doubt that we will cruise the Grandeur again, but there are plenty of other RCL ships to choose from. We are loyal Royals and have always been completely happy with their service so we can deal with a few glitches. I know these types of problems don't impact the majority, but for those of us who are in this situation, it is very important to be accommodated as everyone else is.
