I travelled with three friends. All of us are independently-minded and two of us suffer from ill-health and needed to take things slowly. This formed the basis for some of our choices.

We travelled to Venice independently, three days early, so we could spend time looking around this wonderful city. We had booked at the Hotel Ala (Best Western), which has a great location and low prices. The rooms were small but clean. The bonus for us was being so close to St Mark's Square, so that the two of us with ME/CFS did not have to walk too far. After looking at various costs, we chose to take a water taxi from the airport to our hotel. With four of us travelling, it cost very little more than taking public transport, and saved about an hour in travelling time.

We had pre-purchased Venice cards for travelling around the waterways of Venice, and had planned to collect these from the dock. However, the pick-up office was closed for tea, with no indication when it would open, so we had to leave without them and one of us spent a few hours the next day taking a water bus to the train station to collect them - a frustrating waste of time. Apart from that, the Venice cards were great. We travelled a lot by water in order to get our money's worth! It meant we saw more than we might otherwise have done.
