Pre-cruise Package We arrived in Athens two days ahead of embarking on our 14 day cruise from Piraeus, Greece to Civitavecchia, Italy. Our travel agent arranged a pre-cruise package at which included airfare, hotel for 2 nights and transfer to the port. We stayed at the Athenaeum Intercontinental, which was a very nice hotel and were transferred by a very comfortable bus to the port on Saturday.

The embarkation involved waiting in 2-3 lines at the port and took approximately 45 minutes. Once on the ship, we were encouraged to eat lunch in the buffet dining room and introduce ourselves to the ship. The ship holds 710 passengers. It seemed large to us, but we learned our way around easily. The staff, from the maintenance to the entertainment director, were very friendly, smiling, and ready with small talk. I found this to be amazing. It makes a difference to see apparently happy employees, ready to be of service.

The Stateroom Our room had a small veranda with a table and two chairs. The bed was very comfortable. There was enough storage for our clothes. (There could have been a few more hangars, but we never asked for more.) The towels were thick and over-sized. Thick robes were supplied, and the bedding was good quality. The room was kept very clean. Our butler was a very sweet German girl. She brought us appetizers every day at 4:30. There were 4 appetizers, which were mostly disappointing. They were fancy, but unidentifiable so went untouched. The bathroom was small, but it had a shower that could be used as a hand-held. It was adequate. There was a stationary hair dryer in the bathroom and another hand-held dryer in the vanity near the veranda. There were two standard US outlets (for 4 plugs) over the vanity. The TV in the stateroom had limited channels and frequently the sound was delayed from the picture - out of synch. They did offer "on demand" type programming of movies, and comedy that was decent.
