My wife and myself decided to forego flying for vacation this year and instead decided to try a cruise. Since this was our first cruise experience, we called browsed cruises available to us which fit our schedules. After we chose the cruise, we called Carnival directly and asked many specific questions before deciding and booking. Among the questions specifically asked, was if THIS particular ship had adults only pool area and was assured it did. We were also informed that with the suite accommodations, we received "VIP" treatment. After we had booked, two of my sisters decided to go along, and we booked them a separate cabin. We all had a good time, but there are several ares which needed improvement. To begin with, almost all the information we were given was inaccurate at best, and some simply not true at all. When we checked in, we were delayed in a office for about 15 minutes for "VIP" check-in then escorted to the gangway and told "Have a great time." with no information about anything. (My 2 sisters who did not have the "VIP" treatment were already on board and had drinks on the Lido deck). Then the ship got underway while we were still at the lifeboat drill with no announcement which was disappointing as a first time cruiser. The first night, I stepped on a sliver of broken glass in the cabin which had not been cleaned up prior to our arrival. The following day, I stripped the sheets back on the bed to ensure they were changed. Instead, the bed was remade with the same obviously dirty linen. When my wife requested that they be changed, she was asked "Do you REALLY need them changed? Are they stained?" The crew seemed friendly enough and many made point of remembering names. But after first couple of days, most of the crew seemed to be totally disinterested at best. The second night, one of my sisters had both room key cards and was roaming around the ship. When my wife and I and sister decided to go to our cabins, my sister could not get into her stateroom, and after knocking on the door, and calling from our cabin phone, we determined no one was in the cabin. I called "Guest Services" and explained the situation and requested someone let her in, I was told to "Knock on the door more" (eventhough it was after 1 AM). I told them again, we had done that and tried to call several times, I was told "I'll see if I can get someone" and hung up on. The decks were slippery with several people falling including my sister. Two waiters were watching when she slipped and just continued to lean on the mop and counter and not offer any assistance while looking on. We were told that the aft pool was normally adults only when we asked, but was changed for this cruise. Strange that signs were posted concerning children. I only tried room service once, ordered 2 margaritas, and was told it would take 45 mins to hour. People seemed to do as they pleased disregarding smoking areas and other rules and only saw 1 instance of crew challenge. The guy continued to smoke and laughed at the crewman, who did nothing forcing others to have to leave the area themselves. The only time that seemed to be on schedule, was leaving Port Canaveral, and leaving Freeport to return home. Everything else was either late, or seemed not to happen at all. I chatted with several Carnival veterans, who assured me that this cruise was not representative of Carnival's usual effort, including one man who had taken the exact same cruise last year on the Glory. Speculation is that the captain may have been lax on his crew. Maybe, I don't know. But my wife and I are considering trying another shorter cruise with Carnival, to compare. Regardless of the problems, we all had a good time, especially on the excursions which is why we will cruise again, just maybe not with Carnival.
