A second cruise in 10 weeks on this ship confirmed that staff are trying to deal with difficulties of a new concept for Celebrity. They are not quite there yet so far as the restaurant is concerned. Staff try amazingly hard to please but service is very patchy and the food was more often cold than not, although the actual quality is good. The wine list is appallingly expensive for the quality, and within a couple of days nearly all the reasonably priced non californian wines had gone! 'Wine' waiters are obviously untrained - one told me that the Riesling I enquired about was obviously sweet, "because all Rieslings are sweet". The ship is attractive, cabins are minute, but very comfortable, and the best sunbeds I have come across, but not quite enough of them on sea days. The tours itinerary was unexciting - although the ports were interesting - Odessa particularly so - members wishing to book a good tour in Ukraine should do it ahead of time with www.Ukrainetours.com who laid on a most excellent tour for us, with wonderful guides, at less than half the cost of an inferior ships tours. It would have been interesting to have a port lecturer as the Black Sea part of the tour was new to most guests, and their reasons for choosing that particular itinerary. Travelling through the Dardanelles for example there could have been someone pointing out the major sights and history as we travelled - we answered many questions for the non-European guests, but would have liked more ourselves. Entertainment was patchy, some excellent and others weak. Celebrity have removed the piano bar from its customary place on these ex-Renaissance ships to increase the size of the casino, and placed it in the main hallway - a shame because it has lost its intimate feeling. The shops are very poor, the worst I have every encountered on a ship, and certainly not up to the standard of Oceania (similar vessel) or Celebrity's larger ships. In our opinion its offering is not at the level of Oceania in all respects, but it does offer extremely good value for money. I don't think Celebrity have quite got to grips with open dining (we often waited almost an hour for our meal) or for the heavy balance of Europeans on the two cruises we took - apart from running out of wine they also had issues with low fat milk and marmalade!! On the other side, they are very relaxed about restaurant timings, and all staff, if not always efficient, are extremely charming and try to be helpful. Officers are visible and friendly. There are absolutely no child facilities - go Royal Caribbean if you have kids - there were several on this cruise to the annoyance of some passengers who did not want to hear children screaming in the pool, and they were constantly being told to be quiet.
