This was our 7th cruise, 5 of those cruises in the past two years. We took this cruise just a couple days after the New Year while my daughter was still out of school, for xmas break. My wife & I are in our 40's, and we travel everywhere with our 8 year old daughter. We've become accustomed to cruising on 7 day cruises, so this 4 day cruise was just a short trip, so we weren't as excited. We flew into HOU the night before and stayed at a hotel adjacent to the airport. The hotel shuttled us over to our rental car company, and we drove to Galveston, and parked at the pier. Because there was three of us traveling, it was less expensive to rent a car THU-MON, and pay for parking, than to pay for three to shuttle to the airport and back. My biggest concern for taking this trip in January, came true. The weather wasn't cooperative. The morning of the cruise the temperature in HOU dropped down to 29 degrees, and when we left port, the temperature was around 50 degrees. The first day at sea was cold and windy, and very few people were hanging around the pool areas. Our one stop was Cozumel, and after information posted on Cruise Critic, we decided to take taxi, and hang out at Playa Mia. It was a lot less expensive to go on our own, than pay for the same shore excursion through Carnival. The weather was threatening, and overcast, and the water was a little chilly. On the return, our day at sea was much nicer, and air temperature was in the 70's. The ship is in desperate need of a makeover, and I understand all Fantasy class ships will be part of a 250 million dollar extreme makeover called "Evolutions of Fun". The biggest need is the lido deck buffet that's decor is something out of the 60's. Music was pipped in with music from that era, but I think the reality is that it needs to be modernized. Also our ocean view window was so dirty, we couldn't see out of it. I did send a concern to Carnival, and they did apologize, and gave us a small credit for our next cruise. Carnival is good about responding to concerns. Disembarkation was a nightmare, due to Customs. After we got off ship, it took an additional 2 1/2 hours to clear customs. Even though it is out off Carnival's control, I would think twice about cruising out of Galveston.
