Overview: My wife and I (both in our 40's, with my birthday falling during the cruise) took the January 26th-31st 2008 5-day cruise on the Carnival Ecstasy to Mexico, leaving through Galveston. We have cruised with Carnival (5 times), Royal Caribbean (once), and Celebrity (once). We got a tremendous deal, from another one of Carnival's weekly sales, plus this was a drive to cruise. We live in Fort Worth, TX, so this allowed us to avoid the added expense of flying to the port city.

Embarkation: We drove down to Galveston, on Saturday, the day of the cruise, and experienced virtually no traffic, arriving around 11:40 A.M. There was some concern since a Mardi Gras parade was scheduled for 12:30. I had booked (and paid online for) parking with Lighthouse Parking. They are $30 for the five days, versus $50 for the Port Authority parking. They took us, and our luggage, directly to the cruise terminal where a porter took it away. I would definitely recommend their service. We got in line, at approximately 11:45 A.M., and were on the boat within 20 minutes. Of all our cruises, this was the fastest (and easiest) embarkation we have ever had. Much better than the 2+ hour marathon from our Carnival Conquest cruise fifteen months earlier. Big kudos to Carnival and their representatives.

Ship: The ship is small (70,000 tons) when compared to the behemoths they are currently building. The ship entered service in 1991, but is in excellent shape. The ship, while slightly worn in a few areas, was in great shape. A very noticeable deficiency was that most sea view windows were extremely dirty (our stateroom included). Not a big deal, but just something I would note. I won't go into the specifics of ship, since they can be seen in the brochure, and are spelled out in so many other reviews..
