We like to do a family vacation in January after Christmas to relax after the holidays and include our college age daughter while she is on break. We had great expectations for this trip. Embarkation was a nightmare! We took a RCI bus from Maryland to Bayonne and arrived in about 2 1/2 hours. Unfortunately, our bus like many others was pulled off to the side to wait for 1 1/2 hours. We had arrived at about noon and disembarkation wasn't complete, yet. When we were finally allowed to get off the bus, we were herded into the terminal for check in. That wasn't too bad because I had completed the set sail pass for everyone in our family (7 of us). The shuttle to the ship was next...that was an unpleasant surprise! Very poor set up! We were directed to certain doors of the shuttle bus and had to climb on as quickly as possible with our carry ons. It was easier said than done with so many people trying to get a seat on the shuttle. There were actually people standing. Granted it was a short ride but what a way to start a vacation! Upon entering the ship, we go to find the windjammer buffet. There was no one to direct you. We found it relatively quickly though ourselves, only to find a room jam packed with so many people we couldn't eat together. Soon after our cabins were ready. We had 2 insides and a junior suite. The insides were barely adequate for 2, but crowded with 3 people. The junior suite was very comfortable. All the beds were rock hard, though. We usually choose to eat at late sitting , but deferred to a member of our group and ate at early sitting. I cannot say enough about our service. Our waiter Zoltan and his assistant Nikolay were very accommodating. The food was not as good as our last RCI cruise on the Grandeur nor our trip in October on Celebrity. Room service was very good and prompt, the cafe promenade was also good and Johnny Rocket's was fun. We didn't try the alternative restaurant ( for the first time on a cruise). We never saw any hand sanitizer dispensers, anywhere.Usually, they are near the restaurants. The windjammer was always crowded at lunch and breakfast and we were asked to leave as soon as we finished to accommodate the other passengers. There were no outdoor grills by the pool that you see on other ships because there was no room . The shows that featured the violinist and Charo were just superb! The ice skating shows were exceptional. The singers and dancers were about the same as all the other cruises we've been on. There was plenty to do during sea days. It was difficult to find seats outdoors sometimes on deck, but that can happen on any ship. The ship was just too crowded and too big for our tastes. The elevators were always so crowded it was difficult getting on even a crowded one particularly at dinner time. The ship has 2 elevator shafts because of the area taken up by the promenade. That's not enough for 3500 passengers. Just for clarification purposes, our ages run from 19 to 64 and we were all annoyed by the elevator situation. The itinerary and the good weather made the trip for us. In St Maarten, although we arrived in the afternoon,I had arranged for a private sunset dinner cruise on the Tango. We had a wonderful time. Great dinner and great rum punches and dance music. In Antigua, we went swimming at Dickensen Bay.Great weather, clean beach. In Barbados we went to the Blue Monkey beach instead of our usual Boatyard. It was ok , but not as clean and pristine as the Boatyard. In st. Kitts we took a tour from the pier which wasn't very good. Next time Turtle Beach. In Dominica, we met up with Beno and took a very nice tour.He even helped me buy a cricket bat for my son. Nice man, nice tour. In St.Thomas I had found a private day sail with lunch on the internet. The weather was awful. Many of the ship's excursions had been cancelled because of the weather, but the New Horizon sailboat skipper said the weather was going to clear up by the time we got to St. John. He was right! A great time was had by all! In San juan,my daughter and friend went horseback riding in the rain forest ,a ship excursion. They had a wonderful time! We went on the tour to El Moro, but found out by chance that the national park service had a free shuttle to the forts. We took it back to the ship. Our return up the coast was a needed 2 days of relaxation. We made our usual "deposits" in the casino and bingo. We did win a tour of the bridge at bingo. That was just great! The officers and the captain were very gracious and even let us take photos together. The last night out we had a front passing over us bringing 80-90 mile an hour winds. Captain made the announcement that no one could go out on deck. The doors were locked, but he said not to worry. The ship is so stable we could hardly notice the winds outside. We arrived on time next morning, but the nightmare began again. We waited 3 1/2 ours to get off the ship. Of course, with 3500 passengers! Although,we ended up having a good time, we will probably avoid going on a ship that size with so many passengers. Cape Liberty needs to set up a more organized method to embark and disembark all those people, too.
