  3. Splendour of the Seas
* Background Information This is our 3rd cruise on RCI, and our first cruise in the Mediterranean. We booked it online about 6 months in advance and booked our own air. We live in Western Germany and flew out of Dusseldorf on Swiss Air to Venice. * Hotel Info We also booked our hotel online, directly with the hotel Locanda Novo in Venice. It was 115E for 2 adults and 1 child. A light breakfast of breads and jams was delivered to our room. Bed was decent and room was quiet even with the air conditioning running. Hotel did not have an elevator, but this was publicized on their website. Staff did offer to help with our luggage. Also, we were allowed to leave our luggage in corner of lobby while we explored more of Venice before showing for embarkation. We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a low priced hotel in Venice. * Ship Info The Splendor is a great ship and is a decent size. Everything seemed to be in good order. The only part that could have used some maintenance would have been the mini-golf course, but even it wasn't horrible. * Activities There were many activities to participate in, but one of the days at sea there was a large block of time where there was nothing that interested us. Overall, the activities were good and of the same standard we have come to expect from RCI. One petty complaint, the pool was very cold. The TV in the room would say the pool temperature was 76F, but there was no way it was even close. * Shore Excursions Dubrovnik - We did a DIY walking tour. We were unexpectedly tendered in, but we believe this worked out better, since the tenders delivered us directly into the old city with no need to shuttle bus. Kusadisi - We took the ships Ephesus and Virgin Mary's House tour. Ancient Ephesus was worth the trip. It was very hot, but our guide was very knowledgeable. Only drawback was the stop at carpet store where they try to sell you Turkish carpets Santorini - Had to get up at 0610 to get tender tickets, since we didn't purchase a ship's tour. We arrived at the top of the cable car at 0930 and ended up renting a car for 40E. Saw most of the island in about 5 hours, from Oia on northside, to lighthouse in the south. Highly recommend skipping ship tours and seeing island on your own. Corfu - Took the ship's tour of Achilleon Palace and a Monastery on western coast. Could have probably done this on own renting car, although tour guide was highly knowledgeable. We felt a lot of our day was wasted, because ship docked at 1230, but our tour didn't begin until 1400. There wasn't enough time to leave ship and get back and then in the end, there wasn't any time after the tour to walk any of Corfu town on own. * Stateroom Attendant Rosa was great. Towel animals were always there and room was always clean. * Dining Alejandro and Victor were great team. First two nights were a little rough, but they got it together. Of course there were small mistakes, but they worked hard and always had a smile. The food was a let down, compared to the other RCI cruises we have taken. Another disappointment was that lobster has been taken off the menu on RCI ships. * Children's Clubs This is has sold us on Royal Caribbean. OUTSTANDING, we cannot say enough good things about the Aquanauts program. Our son, after discovering the program, did not leave the ship until we were back in Venice. He loved the program. We would give him a choice and each time he did not choose to go wondering around with Mommy and Daddy. If you have a child, RCI is the way to go, we were able to explore each port without worrying about our son. * Entertainment Not the best we have ever seen on a RCI ship, but is was OK. We made it to 3 of the shows. None were remarkable, but all were somewhat entertaining. * Disembarkation Went very smoothly, except when we arrived in the parking lot, waiting for the shuttle to take us to Piazza Roma. The line for the shuttle quickly devolved into a free for all. It would have been nice for RCI to setup some sort of structured line. Overall this was a great cruise and would recommend it to anyone!
