Right up front I would like to say that we had the most outstanding time on the Pride of America. We were worried after reading some of the reviews posted earlier in the year because this was to be our last family vacation and we wanted something special that all of us would remember as having a great time together. It couldn't have been any better, we all had a fabulous time. Every crew member that we encountered was kind, courteous and friendly and the service was excellent. The ship was spotless and the decor appealing. Embarkation and debarkation were quick and painless, very organized. We sailed with three other families(14 of us all together) and everyone had the same opinions and excellent experience. My wife and I (early 50's) and our two sons (18 & 24) shared an obstructed view cabin for 4 and made out just fine (actually cabin 7102 has an almost totally unobstructed view). When we first entered our cabin we thought we were going to have to get a second for the boys but once we started putting things away there was plenty of room. (lots of storage under beds and plenty of drawer and closet space). Our cabin attendant was excellent... beds were always made and room straightened up and had clean towels every day. The food on board was very good. We had breakfast every morning in the Aloha Cafe...great made to order omelettes and eggs and the buffet items were varied, hot and tasty. It does get a little crowded at times but we always found a place to sit. Go out to the back of the ship and eat on the deck...the open air is relaxing and there are less people out there milling around. The Liberty dinning room was our favorite place for dinner...excellent food and superior service (ask for Andrew & Steven, they will ensure that you have a great dinning experience). The Skyline has basically the same menu but is a deck lower and there is a lot of propeller vibration at many of the tables. The Cadillac Grill is a good place for a quick burger or late night snack, neat set up. Little Italy was good but we prefer the Olive Garden more. We ate at the Lazy J and were very disappointed. The steaks were just average and it took over 2 hours for dinner, maybe it is supposed to be that way but I get better steaks at the Texas Roadhouse. There is plenty to do after dinner. Ken and Casey at the Hollywood Theater were very funny and disco night at the Mardi Gras Cabaret is a blast. The Napa Wine Bar was our favorite hang out (mainly due to Mellissa, she is a lot of fun) but the Pink Champagne Room was a close second. Great guitar and piano players...very relaxing. There are some very nice shops on board and the prices are reasonable. Our boys found plenty to do and made many new friends. Most of the families on our cruise were made up of teens and young adults. We rented vans at Hilo, Maui, Kauai & Honolulu and did our own site seeing. Did the Thrifty Blue Chip thing...quick service no waiting in lines. On Hilo went to Volcano National Park, be sure to take a flashlight and go all the way back in the lava tube...really neat, really dark. Then went to Banyon Drive and Rainbow Falls, both are right in town. After that went up hwy 19 to Akaca Falls (take the 4 mile scenic turn off..great views). On Maui did Road to Hana the first day, there are some great sites and things to do (worth seeing, won't do it again though)...second day the guys golfed at Kahili Golf course..great track, lots of fun and the ladies went shopping..plenty of it there. The Capt'n zodiac raft and snorkel tour on Kona was definitely our favorite shore excursion...great fun and very exciting. Be sure to eat at Bubba Gump's while on Kona...excellent fish & chips. On Kauai went to Wailia Canyon and did the river boat ride to the Fern Grotto on the first day. That night went to the Kalamaku Luau (great food & entertainment..well worth the cost). On the second day, took it easy on the beach (10 minute walk from ship) while the boys took surfing lessons. Got back to Honolulu Saturday Morning and went to Pearl Harbor (must see) then up to the North Shore and Waiamea Falls then back down to Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel (go inside, fantastic!) The only complaint we had was with the transfer from the airport to the ship...very disorganized, we had to carry and load our own luggage, very poor service. We booked them through NCL but it was a contract carrier. Take a cab, much cheaper and easier. All said, this was a very enjoyable vacation and I would highly recommend sailing with NCL on The Pride of America.
