Sail Date: May 2007

This was our third cruise and third time on Grandeur. We went on this cruise to tie us over until a 12 night one on the Explorer in December 2007. We chose to go back on the Grandeur because of the proximity of Baltimore from where we live and because we kept being told about changes being made to her during a dry dock scheduled for April 2007. Overall we did not notice to many changes. The Windjammer had some new serving buffets, but they still seemed fairly spread out. There also seemed to be less room to move around the new buffets. And they did not get rid of the desert police, as someone from RC still guards the desert buffet and must serve you. We rarely eat inside the Windjammer, but it did not look like a lot of tables were added, although there may have been. The Champagne bar on Deck 4 had a few more tables and chairs and a small fountain had been placed near it. Unfortunately the Art Auctions at Sea did not go, most days artwork was taking up most of the sitting area around the Champagne Bar, and walking throughout the Centrum when an Auction was going on just proved to be annoying. There was some new carpet throughout the ship. The beds were new along with new bed linens and pillow. The bed linens were really nice and comfortable. The pillows seemed large and there were plenty of them. The bed however needed some work, overall it was fairly comfortable, however, we asked that the beds be put together (to form a queen size bed) and that an egg crate foam be placed on it. This was done fairly quickly, but when we slept in the bed, we found ourselves in the morning pulling ourselves out of a hammock created by the foamed egg crate and sheets, since the beds kept coming apart during the night, many more nights of this and we were going to ask the beds to just be separated. Apparently, the dent was taken out of the front of the ship, but we never really got to see that side of the ship, so we will take their word for it. The outdoor pool had been painted and looked nice. The outdoor hot tubs had been given some new ceramic tiles, which became a real eye sore, the colors just clashed with the other colors on the pool deck. Most other areas of the ship remained unchanged. Leaving out of Baltimore is really nice, but as it happened last year there was only two security lines for all arriving passengers. Last year we waited over an hour in this line. This year there were not as many people in line, and within a half an hour we were through. I can only imagine there would still be long lines if many people showed up at the same time to board. Once past security it only takes a few minutes for someone to take your set sail paperwork, issue your sea pass card and have you boarding the vessel. We chose to go with an Large Interior Stateroom for this cruise, as we had always cruised in a Junior Suite in the past. The Interior room was nice an cozy, great for a 5 night cruise, especially the price difference from a Junior Suite. There was plenty of storage space and we in fact had much unused storage space. There was plenty of room to move around. The bathroom was small but served the purpose. Overall the room was quaint. The only setback from having an interior room was not knowing what the weather outside was like to dress accordingly. The food onboard was okay. The Windjammer was good, nothing to brag home about. The Dining Room was better and meals were hot and cooked to our liking. The Solarium had hamburger, hot dogs and pizza until 2 a.m. we did get a slice of pizza almost every night. We did not try room service, but we understood they served all through the night. Unbelievably there were many on the ship that were upset because they could not eat 24/7. I am not sure who would want to eat a 5 course meal at 3 in the morning but there were a lot of passengers complaining because they could not, even though there were two midnight buffets. I guess it is true, some people only cruise to eat the food all day and all night. Entertainment onboard is lacking. This has been our biggest complaint with RC. The quality of the shows and entertainers is less than good. We have chosen to skip most of the onboard shows in the evening just so we are sure not to be disappointed. RC set up a Dockyard Festival on the pier in Bermuda, and this too lacked quality entertainment. Apparently, this festival is held every Tuesday through the summer. The trip to Bermuda was kind of rough, in fact on the way there the pools were drained to avoid anymore water coming up on the pool deck. We had a nice wave pool. The outdoor pool was not really used the entire cruise. Once it was filled back up in calmer water and we docked in Bermuda someone apparently vomited in the pool. Regulations do not allow to drain the pool in port, so we had to wait until we left Bermuda for the pool to be drained and cleaned and then filled back up. When this was complete on the way back from Bermuda it was to rainy and cold to get in the pool. There never was a belly flop competition. We had been lead to believe that there was plenty to do at King’s Wharf (Royal Dockyard) were we docked, the ship was to big to dock anywhere else in Bermuda. This was not the case, there was very little to do. We wasted the first day trying to find things to do around the pier. Since we were only there a half of a day on the second day we chose to get a bus token and go to Horseshoe Bay. This was a very nice beach, had public restrooms, changing rooms and a small café. Plenty of room on the beach without being trampled on by other beach-goers. We did not make it into Hamilton, but would suggest if anyone goes on this cruise - get a bus/ferry pass and try to make it there, seemed like a lot of people on the ship did make it there and had a lot of fun, we will know in the future. Remember Bermuda is a fairly expensive place, but overall it was really nice and the people seemed friendly. The seas were not quite as rough on the return trip to Baltimore. Also it seemed as most of the activities were left for the last day on the ship, as we saw many we wanted to do, but no time to do them all. As always on the Grandeur the staff were excellent. We have nothing but great things to say about every staff member we came in contact with over the 5 nights. Overall, we would certainly do this cruise again and probably will in 2008. The 5 night cruise would be great for first time cruisers. Now we just sit back and try to stay patient before we board the Explorer of the Seas in December.
