I just got back from the Liberty on Saturday. This was our first Carnival cruise in a long time. We have been mostly on RCCL, Celebrity and Princess. In Freeport, Grand Cayman, and Costa Maya we beached it. It was such a horrible winter in the Northwest this year, we just wanted to lay on the beach, soak in the sun and swim. We took a taxi to Lucaya beach in Freeport. We went to the Sheraton and got a couple of lounge chairs $10.00 a piece. They also gave us towels so no need to pack the ship towels here. They gave us a wrist band to wear to prove we paid for the chair. The taxi was not expensive. Sorry I can't remember how much. It was very windy the day we were there and cloudy. It cleared a little later but swimming was a challenge. The water was pretty and warm there though. Very clear too. Afterwards we walked to the little marina across the street where the restaurants and shops were. This is a nice place to pass some time, get a few gifts and have a drink. A lot of the ship passengers were here by the time we got there. There was a long line for some tropical drinks served in coconuts! Everything was clean and pretty here. I actually prefer Freeport to Nassau. The locals were more friendly and polite. Grand Cayman is on my 5 best beaches list. I love swimming here. Perfect sand, water, always nice when I have been here. I was surprised by all the new building going on here. A lot more stores etc. since I was here a couple years ago. We went to Tortuga Rum shop first. There are a few of them in town now. I didn't eat breakfast so I could have Rum Cake samples We ordered our rum to be delivered back to the ship for us. Then took a single cab to Sea Grape beach. One thing we have learned is NOT to get in a van that waits until they fill up before leaving for the beach. It takes away precious time in port and they squish you in like sardines. Doesn't make for a pleasant ride. We chose a cute little cab. We asked how much before we even got into the cab. The driver was nice and we talked about Grand Cayman. I was surprised to learn that there is no property tax in Grand Cayman. He said you pay a tax when you buy your house and that is it! He said a lot of Americans live there part of the year. I said "it's all good, until the hurricane comes!" He said THAT is their tax Sea grape beach was very nice. We were able to get two nice lounge chairs and a very nice umbrella for $25.00. The drinks were good. I got something like a milkshake with bananas and rum. VERY yummy. We shopped a little in the stores on the way back to the ship, in town. Stopped by Margaritaville for one drink and then back on the ship. I wasn't too impressed with Margaritaville. I got spoiled by the Ocho Rios one. That was better. Right on the beach. I could come back to Grand Cayman every year. It is just a very nice port. Great people. Costa Maya was your basic tourist trap. Very aggressive merchants. You couldn't walk by a shop without them trying to get you to come in and shop. We took the bus to Mahahual. We knew we wanted to go to Pez Quadro. Unfortunately since we took the bus, we were dropped off at the wrong end of the little street and had to walk the "gauntlet" to get there. We were bugged by the locals all the way down the street. They either wanted us to buy something or go to their restaurant on their beach for the day. We kept saying, later we will shop, and "we are meeting someone at Pez Quadro". We liked our choice for a place to be for the day. But I really didn't like the water as much here as our two previous ports. Too shallow. The water was actually too warm until you got WAY out. There is a lot of sea grass all over the whole beach area and they have channels you go through it. The water was very clear though. Not someplace I would care to go back to. We planned to eat here for lunch. We sat down at a table After about 15 minutes a waiter gave us a menu and after 20 more minutes didn't ever come back to see what we wanted! The guys next to us got their food, which didn't look very appealing and said they waited over forty minutes to get it after they sat down. So we left. We walked down to Cat's Meow and had a very delicious lunch. Chicken and Beef fajitas. I think it was about $10.00 each. I had a Strawberry Margarita. The Canadian owner came over and said a few words to us, as is her usual I hear. On the way through town. I bought a few things. They are very good about going down in price. There was a bathing suit cover up I got for $12.00 He started out saying he wanted $35.00. I told him I never pay over $12.00 for one like that. I notice a LOT of things start out being $35.00? We got back to town in a taxi $2.00. I wish we had taken one to town in the first place. Note... when we got to Costa Maya we were told to go to the taxi stand window where we pay then they herd us all to the bus. NO air-conditioning!!!! It was very hot and stuffy. We had to wait until the bus was full before leaving. I saw no small cabs here at all? We jumped into the town swimming pool when we got back to Costa Maya and had a long tall cool frozen drink at the swim up bar. A lot of drunk ship folks here. I was amazed they made it back to the ship. The shops in town were more expensive than in the town, for some of the same merchandise. They have to pay higher rent here I am sure. I didn't buy anything here. I would not go back to this port again. It was just O.K. There are way better places in the Caribbean to go see. The ship was BIG and clean and nice. But gaudy decor, loud and rowdy at times. The food was good a few nights at dinner. The buffet food was below standard a lot of the time. The shows weren't great. The first show. The International one was the best.  I liked our cabin, cabin steward, waiter, asst. waiter etc. All very good and nice. The cabin pillows were very comfy. Bed duvet etc. The Martinis were small for the money. The Margaritas were made from a mix. Not real strawberries. Maybe if I was 20 something I would like this cruise better. I do not think it is a good cruise line for small kids. Toddlers babies etc. Way too loud and rowdy and too many drunks, all times of the day, not just late at night. There was a synchronized swimming competition at the pool one day. The young couple thought it was funny to moon everyone and the other couple after them did too. Not great with all the kids by the pool. Then one day a man was in the hot tub and his friends took off his swim trunks. The guy had to run out naked to retrieve them. With again a lot of kids by the pool. I felt at times this was an adults only cruise, where the adults just didn't care about the fact there were children around. Every night we had to listen to out LOUD neighbors partying until all hours of the night. Very loud drunk people in the hall yelling and hooping and hollering. Like at 3 am! EVERY night. I thought going in May we would avoid the whole "Spring Break" atmosphere, but was surprised by the rowdy crowd on this cruise. I thought we got a good value for our money. But next time I think I will not be so cheap and go back to Princess, RCCL or Celebrity. Just fits us better I think. I know by sons age 25 and 26 would probably love this cruise
