Just took a 9-day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean on the NCL Gem - the ship needs updating and I was disappointed to find out that the updating I thought was going to take place in November 2013 still has not taken place yet.
All in all, though, it was an enjoyable cruise. The staff for the most part are very nice - but it should be noted that this cruise hit very VERY rocky seas and in speaking with the crew, the week before's cruise had hit even rockier seas. Pack your Dramamine / Bonine as everyone in our party of 6 had sea sickness for at least one day. The Grand Pacific dining room, which I had originally thought was the nicer of the two dining rooms, had HORRIBLE service. I felt ignored for the majority of the two meals I had there and then rushed out once the meal was finally completed. The Magenta dining room had warm and friendly staff and pretty much the same tasty meals were available in both dining rooms. Le Bistro - WOW! I cannot say enough good things about it. This was my third NCL cruise and the first time in Le Bistro and I will definitely plan to eat there again when I cruise with NCL again.
This room is billed as being larger than a standard balcony room and has a slightly larger balcony but my complaint is the bathroom and the amount of space between the end of the bed and the wall. It has a tub rather than a walk-in shower but the tub is very narrow so it is uncomfortable to stand in and the sides are very high (and hard to get in and out of) and with a sliding door. I would not recommend this room for adults at all - families who want to bathe their kids, yes, but adults, no. During rough seas, the shower doors rattled annoyingly. The location of the room is good, though - quiet and near the forward elevator.
