We mostly choose cruises by destinations and this was no exception. While we've spent a fair bit of time on the main islands of Vanuatu and New Caledonia, this cruise also went to Lifou, Espiritu Santo, Mystery Island and Ile des Pins. Checkin was a mess with Crown and Anchor members having to wait longer than others.

We had to divert around a cyclone to get to Noumea but it was only slightly rough. The cruise seemed to be attractive to bogans and it was disappointing that dining room dress codes weren't enforced. We used mytime dining and service in the main dining room was excellent. I didn't encounter any queues at breakfast or lunch in Windjammer, the buffet restaurant. It was good that RCL now don't charge corkage on the 2 bottles of wine you're allowed to bring onboard.

It's a shame that RCL don't provide laundrettes/ironing facilities but we managed. Trivia quizzes were good and covered a range of topics. We also enjoyed the mini golf, shuffleboard, table tennis and rock wall.

Cabin Review

Large Ocean View Stateroom

Cabin G

We chose this cabin as it looks straight out forwards over the bow. When we boarded, we thought we'd made a mistake as the room smelt of cigarette smoke. It turned out that there's a crew smoking area directly under the cabin. We reported the problem to our steward who said that he would spray the room and that the smell would disappear once we were at sea. That proved to be true and we didn't notice the smell again until we got back to Sydney. The cabin is fairly standard except for the 'alcove'. Because it faces forward, the window slopes at about 45 degrees. That means the window 'sill' is about 1.5 m deep. We climbed over the bed and sat in there several times. Since the cabin is right at the bow, it's a long walk to the restaurants etc. I saw that as a good thing to walk off the meals.
