Sapphire Princess Cruise Review by ETdreamer
- Sail Date: January 2015
- Destination: Asia
The interior stateroom was roomy and comfortable, and in no way claustrophobic (a concern prior to the trip). The steward for our area did his job, but was not particularly engaged, it seemed. There were a couple of times his assistance was sought, but there didn't seem to be any real effort to be a 'consummate host'.
Food: we were somewhat disappointed with the variety of food available in the Horizon Court area, and especially the desert menu seemed quite limited. My wife asked if there was any ice-cream available and was directed to go and get an ice-cream cone at the on-deck ice-cream servery, which had quite limited options.
Entertainment: we were looking forward as previously to watching some new release movies at Movies Under the Stars, but the program was mainly recorded concerts, with just one newish movie. The live entertainment in Princess theatre that we saw seemed to be catering for the Asian clientele, with the talented singer mainly performing in Chinese. The entertainment in the Piazza was very enjoyable with the piano man and the quintet providing excellent shows. The art auction, whilst seemingly poorly supported, was enjoyable and informative and professionally presented.
Positives: the art team were very knowledgable and helpful. Our experiment with an interior stateroom was entirely successful and convinced us that a longer cruise was doable in an interior cabin.
Negatives: the crew in general didn't seem as friendly nor as eager to serve as on our previous cruise on Sea Princess. Whilst we understood this cruise followed the American custom of gratuities we found that there seemed to be a lot more additional charges than previously experienced. For example, a poolside beer included an added service charge, when one would imagine gratuities would already cover tips in such areas. Also, unlike Sea Princess, to use the sauna and steam room you had to purchase an additional 'spa package', in this case something like $89 for us as a couple, an exorbitant price we felt considering this was just a 3-night cruise. Every time we would ask for something we both were wondering how much they were going to charge us, which put a damper on things.
Conclusion: we would not be in a hurry to experience Sapphire Princess again. When compared with our previous experience aboard the Sea Princess, this cruise came a very distant second. We are thankful we had such a positive time on our first cruise, so that this one didn't completely dampen our enthusiasm for the Princess cruise line.
