After cruising on the Breakaway's sister ship, the Getaway, last year, we were excited to extend our cruise to 12 days. Like when we cruised out of Miami, we extended our vacation by arriving four days early in New York. New York was fantastic, despite the cold.
The cruise and the ship were wonderful, as expected. There was one aspect of the cruise that wasn't great, and we lived and learned. We had never seen so many canes, walkers, wheelchairs and motorized wheelchairs in one location in our lives. Not being overly young (58 and 51), we were "youngsters" on this cruise. It didn't have a huge effect on our good time, but the party atmosphere was missing. On the second day at sea, heading back to New York, the weather was colder and raining, so everyone had to be inside. The public sitting areas throughout the ship looked like a retirement and/or nursing home, with every chair occupied, many with a cane, walker or wheelchair next to it, and numerous people sleeping, in the middle of the day.
In talking with some crew, they mentioned three things that contributed to the age of the passengers: length of the cruise, home port and time of year.
Nice cabin. Bathroom in the mini-suite is much larger.
