Sail Date: Dec 2014

An enjoyable cruise which, at the discounted fare, was good value for money (probably 5*) but which seems highly overpriced at brochure price. Booking was made less than three weeks before sailing. Swan Hellenic reservations team very helpful and all documention received in good order. Flights (Emirates via Dubai outbound and Singpaore Airlines inbound) were on time and SH represntatives at airport to ensure all went smoothly. Arrival in Colombo was excellent. Never had so many people to guide me to the coach and handle the baggage. Quayside check-in at the ship took only a few minutes and we were on board less than two hours after landing despite a 30 minute drive from the airport. Cabins were available by mid-day.

Swan Hellenic is not a cruise line for those seeking constant amusement with bingo, shows and deck games. We had four lecturers giving three talks a day at sea on the history and general background of the countries we were visitng. The talks were generally of a high standard and well presented and the speakers were happy to talk to passengers at other times. Other and evening entertainment was provided by an operatic group and a classical guitarist/pianist. There was also a band providing music for dancing. Pre-dinner quizzes and craft instruction were also available. Our cruise benefitted from bridge organised by a fellow passenger which filled most afternoons at sea.

The ports of call were mostly interesting but there were more days at sea than on land and three ports had only a half-day visit which was rather short. The two days in Yangon were the undoubted hightlight.

Cabin Review

Cabin G

A pleasant cabin, but very noisy when the ship is under way. None of the staff seemed willing or able to explain the intermittent, but frequent, crashing and juddering which could be heard/felt elsewhere in the ship but was particulalyl noticeable in the cabin. As a solo traveller in a double cabin I ahd plenty of space but I feel it would have been cramped and short of storage space for two adults.Bed was comfortable but the two seater settee was small. Lighting was no more than adequate.
