We gave this interesting city a high rating, although we were able to explore very little of it in the time allowed because we docked at 4:00 p.m., and were due to sail at 10:00 p.m. the same day. Some of our fellow passengers visited the local restaurants and were full of enthusiasm for the food. This was our first visit to SJ, and it is definitely a place we would like revisit for a longer stay, because the stores offered interesting selections of local goods and there seems to be a great deal of history to discover. We were fortunately the only ship in port that day, so the relatively uncrowded streets were a blessing.

San Juan

The Reflection was one of four big cruise ships that docked in Charlotte Amalie on our second port day. We considered a trip to Megan's Bay, but the sheer volume of passengers flooding onto the dock seemed about to overwhelm this small island, so we confined our excursions to the local shopping zone. It's a shame that signs for the Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Farm are not more prominent, because we didn't see them until we were back onboard, and we didn't feel like disembarking a second time.If you can endure overcrowded shopping malls for any length of time, you will probably enjoy this port.

St. Thomas

If St. Thomas was bad, this was even worse! Phillipsburg is proof that Hell is full, and the dead are walking the Earth. They shuffle in zombie-like trances from jewellery store to jewellery store, seemingly blinded by bling.We first visited this port 18 years ago, when our ship anchored in the roads and tendered us ashore. With 4 ships anchored off Phillipsburg was heaving with bodies even then - and those ships carried fewer passengers!There were 6 cruise ships docked at the cruise terminal on our third port day, including the Oasis of the Seas. The cruise terminal can in fact dock 8 vessels, so we can only begin to imagine the congestion that might cause. Only the bravest or most dedicated shopping fanatics should even consider visiting this port.

St. Maarten

We usually book an inside cabin because we spend very little time in it apart from sleeping. Our cabin on deck 10 was clean and comfortable, but sickness-prone sailors should probably choose a cabin on a lower deck. On deck 10 you are well above the ship’s centre of gravity, and you really feel the effects of heavy seas. Fortunately, neither of us suffers from sea sickness. Cabin attendants Tracia and Wayan looked after us well, and kept our cabin clean and tidy.

Celebrity claims one of its initiatives to ‘Save the Waves’ is to send each passenger an electronic questionnaire after the cruise has ended, instead of a distributing a paper copy to each cabin on the last day.This is our second Celebrity cruise; the first was on the Equinox in 2013.
